Asians, Blacks and Hispanics like white people more than they like each other

Add me to the "hi, you have a race now" crowd. I think it's quite simplistic, lumping ALL people from Latin American descent into ONE category (either Hispanic or Latino); as if we were all the same; precluding folks like chispas from claiming their Caribbean ancestry based on physical characteristics.

Let's call them "chispas" from now on.

Really??????

Yep. One Chispa, two Chispas. Short for Caribbean Hispanic.

At least we don't say half cast like the UK does.

The longer it takes to introduce yourself the less you've actually accomplished

In contrast, more than 60 percent of African-Americans dismissed the American dream as not working for them.

They got that backwards.

The American dream doesn't "work" for you -- you have to work for the American dream.

That is exactly right. There is no such thing as a "free lunch" so to speak. You gotta work to get what you want. Nobody's going to hand it to you on a silver platter.

Let's see...in Louisiana I have heard the terms...mulatto...quadroon...octoroon...quintroon...etc.

It's only offensive if one takes offense to it or if hanging that tag on someone is detrimental. Otherwise it is just an adjective. Big deal!

Thiry five years ago when I took driver's ed in high school we had to list race on the form to get the learner's permit. Orientals could choose "White" or "Oriental". Hispanics could choose "Hispanic" or "White". But Whites could only choose "White". If I remember correctly Blacks could choose "Black" or "Negro". I seem to remember the form was fill-in-the-blank rather than multiple choice.

My current driver's license doesn't even have a racial designation. It was never on the licenses even 35 years ago. Just the photo. So...why do they even ask or need to know?

The truth is that the different racial groups want it that way for a multitude of reasons that are too lengthy to list in one post. Welcome to America. ;)

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

US Congresswoman Barbara Jordan (D-TX)

Testimony to the House Immigration Subcommittee, February 24, 1995

That study with the black children broke my heart while I was watching it.

Concerning the ticking of the boxes......if you feel offended, then don't! The box I tick doesn't define who I am as a person....there are a grillion different 'white' people. Am I white like a WASP? No. My heritage is Italian....hell, when I lived in the UK, some people described me as 'brown' (well, they're blue-white) ;)

Tick the box, don't tick the box....boxes don't define who you are...you do.

Same goes for any pan-category. Agreed, race is a socially constructed concept etc., etc., etc. (here the work of Henry Giroux is a really engaging read), but it does mess with your life and your career: whether you want it to or not.

Same goes for lumping people into the "White" category, but people don't seem to think that's such a big deal.

I agree. That's why I said pan-categories: all encompassing, omni-defining.

Exactly. There's antique white, off white, ultra white and cream cheese white just to name a few. I'm actually quite offended that cream cheese me is lumped in with the off white crowd. :P
