Vikram Pandit, Citigroup Inc.'s newly appointed chief executive officer, may cut costs and sell assets to shore up capital in the face of growing mortgage losses.

"Nothing is off the table,'' Pandit, 50, said in an interview. Each of Citigroup's businesses will be scrutinized "objectively and dispassionately'' as part of a "front-to-back review'' of expenses and productivity, he said.

Yeap. payroll is too easy to cut and too large a target, any CEO worth his salt will look there first. Low hanging fruit, y'know.

The job cuts have already been announced. He seems to be talking about possibly chopping some of the businesses off altogether. That's not a new debate at Citi either and might actually be a good thing in the mid and long term. Citi just seems too have grown too large having had the focus on doing everything rather than focusing on what it does well.
