wonder what the rules are for IL ?????

Mephys is from IL, and I'm sure you stated earlier that she just went in and transferred it. No road test or written test. You might want to search for that thread, or just PM her. She's working now, but will probably answer in a few days. I'm pretty sure though she just got it transferred over.

Here in MO, I had to take the road test, and written test. Annoying, and I was nervous as heck as I'd had my drivers license for 34 years by that point, but I passed with flying colours. Here in MO, you need your GC to change over your license. I've been here since January, and just drove on my Canadian license.

Late reply.... sry

I actually had to take the written test in IL in order to change my Canadian DL. Just go to the DMV they will give you a little book with all the road rules, and there are questions/answers at the end of each chapter. They are the same questions as the written test. And it cost 6$ and they gave me a license that expires in 2011!!!!!! And I went with my EAD and I had no problems, no need to wait for the GC.

Yeah.... I just don't get the States that take your out-of-country license. They have no authority to confiscate an official document issued by another country. That's along the same vein as taking your Canadian passport when you become a US citizen.

Your DL isn't issued by a country...it's issued by the state/province. Comparing it to a passport doesn't work.

You can't go around with two DLs...you need to be accountable in the state/province in which you live.

Back on topic, I went to a DPS in TX yesterday. I was told I wouldn't have to take the tests and could just transfer my Alberta DL.

you actually can have DLs from different countries, just not 2 from the same country. Atleast in Canada and the US-I have 2 (Alberta and WY) it's not illeagal just unusual. however, it would be illeagal for me to have 2 US state licenses.

Uh, of course it is. It's the big province near the middle. I'm afraid I'm missing your point.

Well I get what krikit was saying. One government office in one country (be it Federal, Provincial or State) taking away a document issued by another Government department in another country (again be it Federal, Provincial or State).

Carla, that was genius!!

When I got my ON license, they took my Minnesota license. When I got my AZ license, they let me keep my ON license. I think it just depends on the province/state. I am currently licensed in AZ (expires 2029, yes its true) and ON (expires 2011). Each state and province seems to have different rules equally, so yes, it is frustrating for the individual, but both sides of the border play the game equally as well.

Maryland took my Canadian CDL and gave me a regular DL instead... thanks.

Do you still technically have a canadian license? If I were to call them to get another one some how?

I imagine you could report it "lost" and get a replacement. But you can't have one if you don't have a Canadian address. I know the guy at the passport office told me not to let mine lapse. So I went home and renewed it this summer. But, then, Florida didn't take my Canadian license.

That's an idea...I hated that Joel had to give up his NS license.

I can't believe all these states and provinces took away drivers licences from your native countries. They really have no right to do that. I had to take a written test and a road test for my Indiana licence and I made it clear to them (although they knew already) that they wouldn't be taking away my Ontario licence because they had no right to do that. It seems to me that many of you got screwed...

Yeah well, it was a case of "if you don't 'surrender' your Cdn license, you WON'T be issued a GA license." Screwed or not, with that being the only alternative, he gave up his NS license. *sigh*

Here in Georgia, you have to take the written AND the road test...and only after you have a valid EAD or GC in hand. Our DMV here is...well...bass ackwards to say the least. It didn't matter that we had applied for Joel's EAD at the time...nor did it matter that we had the NOA1 for all of the apps we had filed. They had to dig in a back room to find a small "manual" so they'd know what to do "in situations like this". Once we had Joel's EAD we went back and it took SIX HOURS to complete their process. *shakes head* Unfreakinbelievable.
