Just thought I'd throw in WY and NM info just to fill out a few more states. Both WY and NM just exchange Canadian licenses. However, the hubby has been rejected twice in NM because the person he was talking to didn't know the rules. hopefully tomorrow he'll successfully get a NM license. When I got my WY license, they even let me keep my AB license. Other than the fun of having 2 licenses it's not much benefit to me, but if I had any special endorsements on my AB license that would probably be really cool.

CT requires a marriage license and AOS receipt (or at least they did for us. I think Hamden makes up its own rules.) before they will issue a license. Once they do, however, you get the standard six year license with no restrictions, and you are able to keep your Canadian license.

Yeah.... I just don't get the States that take your out-of-country license. They have no authority to confiscate an official document issued by another country. That's along the same vein as taking your Canadian passport when you become a US citizen.

Maryland took my Canadian CDL and gave me a regular DL instead... thanks.

Do you still technically have a canadian license? If I were to call them to get another one some how?

I imagine you could report it "lost" and get a replacement. But you can't have one if you don't have a Canadian address. I know the guy at the passport office told me not to let mine lapse. So I went home and renewed it this summer. But, then, Florida didn't take my Canadian license.

AB took my WY license away when I moved to Calgary. they said that the only way I could keep my WY license was to retake all the tests and be on the probation program as if I'd never driven before. obviously, I just let them keep my WY license

I can't believe all these states and provinces took away drivers licences from your native countries. They really have no right to do that. I had to take a written test and a road test for my Indiana licence and I made it clear to them (although they knew already) that they wouldn't be taking away my Ontario licence because they had no right to do that. It seems to me that many of you got screwed...

basically it's a choice between having your Canadian license treated as if its from another state and just trading it in or acting like you've never been licensed before and taking the tests. Alot of us don't really don't want to have to retake the tests and don't mind surrendering our Canadian (or in my case when I moved to Canada my US) license. it's not a matter of being screwed it's just whether the bother of retesting is worth keeping the license

I think their logic is that they're treating Canada like the 51st state, and you can't have two state licenses. But it's a little screwy.

I made it sound a lot easier. First they said "oh, we just need your marriage license." Then they said, "oh, but your I-94 has expires so you're not here legally, so we need the receipt that you've filed."

success finally. the hubby got rejected from the MVD again this morning-they said that he had to take all the tests again. So, I called the main MDV office in Santa Fe again to get conformation that he didn't need to take any of the tests. So I went with him to the MVD and wahla it worked.

I see what you're saying but I still believe some people have been screwed. A Canadian drivers licence is just that...a CANADIAN drivers licence. Neither country should have the authority to make you surrender it. Personally if they did, I would still do the road test because my Canadian licence is...mine. They have no business taking it.

You make me laught Joe. The drivers examination centre said I had to "surrender" my Canadian license as well. While she was filling out the forms, to give me my MO license, I pinched the corner of my Cdn. license the corner and slowly started to slide it towards me. She didn't seem to notice the movement, and I dumped it over the edge into my purse. After she finished doing what she was doing, she gathered up all the papers on her desk, and handed them to me, I think forgetting the license. hehe
