I really hate the fact I have to redo the exam- I feel like a nervous teenager again. I am more nervous about the written that the driving part although I should get some parallel parking practice in.

I am still waiting for my EAD and then I can apply for SSN- once I get SSN I will apply for my drivers. I did pick up one of those books to study from though.

I will have to take the written and driving exam here in Louisiana.

how long are you having to wait? My fiancee will obviously need to get a DL, as public transit basically doesn't exist in Louisiana. She has never driven, so it's going to be a fun journey.

Sign her up for a driver's training course. I always think it is a good idea to let a professional teach driving- that way she won't pick up any bad habits from the start. She'll have time to develop her own habits after she gets her license. :)

I know in Canada, insurance rates for new drivers are lower if you have taken the course, I'm not sure if you have anything like that here in LA.

PA will transfer the DL over, no problem.

I'm super happy about that, especially since I was stuck in the graduated driver's licensing program for so long back in BC -_-

dmv.org and then click on ur state and do a search

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

wonder what the rules are for IL ?????

Mephys is from IL, and I'm sure you stated earlier that she just went in and transferred it. No road test or written test. You might want to search for that thread, or just PM her. She's working now, but will probably answer in a few days. I'm pretty sure though she just got it transferred over.

Here in MO, I had to take the road test, and written test. Annoying, and I was nervous as heck as I'd had my drivers license for 34 years by that point, but I passed with flying colours. Here in MO, you need your GC to change over your license. I've been here since January, and just drove on my Canadian license.

I would also be interested to know what the rules are for Illinois. I tried looking on the DMV site and all it mentions are out-of-state licenses, nothing about international ones. If anyone has this information I'd love it if you shared! :)

Does anyone know what North Carolina's rules are for driver's licences??

Here's the link for the NC DMV and their listed requirements to get a license: http://www.ncdot.org/dmv/driver_services/d...quirements.html

I would also be interested to know what the rules are for Illinois. I tried looking on the DMV site and all it mentions are out-of-state licenses, nothing about international ones. If anyone has this information I'd love it if you shared! :)

From the Illinois DMV FAQs:

I will be working in/moving to Illinois. How do I obtain a driver's license?

Drivers moving to Illinois may use their valid driver's license from their home state or country for 90 days. You may obtain an Illinois driver's license or identification card only if you are becoming a legal resident of Illinois. If you have a valid driver's license from another state or country, you may use it to drive in Illinois throughout your stay (if you do not plan to become a permanent resident of this state). Illinois does not recognize the international driver's license.

To receive an Illinois driver's license or ID card, you must provide acceptable identification to prove name, date of birth, Illinois residency, Social Security Number and your signature for comparison.

To obtain an Illinois driver's license, you must successfully complete a vision screening, written examination and possibly a driving examination, and pay the appropriate fee. An Illinois driver's license is valid for four years. An Illinois ID card is valid for five years.
