Lisa, try not to embarrass yourself by claiming how embarrassed you are for ME. That's southern female bull$hit for "I can argue faster than you" and you're really wasting your skills in that regard on another old pro.

And I'd suggest you take your own advice about not knowing the full situation of peoples relationships. Makes you kind of touchy when the shoe is on the other foot, doesn't it?

Becca, please knock it off. I am not trying to argue with you here. I'm not making any personal judgments towards anyone's particular situation...'...I don't need to know the 'full situation of people's relationshipsa question was asked, and I answered it. If I seem touchy to you, it's because this constant bickering with you has gotten oh so old. You've questioned aspects of my relationship: I answered them honestly and fully....how that's touchy is anyone's guess.

I can't see how you can logically lecture me about not knowing the full situation of ppl's relationships, yet you judge mine with ease, but whatever.

And btw...I'm from NY...not that it matters to the conversation, but I'm so far from southern it's not even funny. One o my fave songs is 'Native New Yorker' by Oddessy ;)

;)

Gotcha.

So I have a question for everyone out there who has gone through with a K1 Visa:

When the foreign fiance(e) moved to the USA, how did they manage to support themselves? Because I am basically assuming that my fiance is not going to get an EAD, and I am only a University Student with a part-time job, and cannot support him.

Basically, I'm wondering how everyone else got by not being able to work, and living in a foreign country.

Thanks in advance!

You get a full time job long before you ever apply for a fiance visa! Government won't consider applicants who can't show they can support their future spouse. Affidavit of Support is what you need to provide.

Good luck, buddy!

The men I've known in my life all knew how they were going to support their brides before they proposed. A few boys weren't so wise. Perhaps you're a premature petitioner.

Hunny, if you'd taken the time... you'd realize that I was the WOMAN, and my MAN makes plenty of money to support me in Canada, but has chosen to go with my wishes, and move to the states with me... The traditional roles are being reversed in this situation, and I am trying to find a way to support HIM.

I'm not looking for someone to mooch off of, I'm just trying to be with the one I love. Thanks though

All right, here is a freeloader's advise

Usually housing is the major cost.

If you are religious, you may ask your church for help with housing. Sometimes they have dormitory style living quarters for those in need. In exchange you will have to go to masses and may be help around a little... but if you are religious anyway, that should not be a problem :)

Ask around, may be someone needs a house sitter for several months, close to the date of your fiance's arrival. That's a nice free housing for you ;)

Otherwise - move in with your parents/siblings temporarily.

You could ask for a room in exchange for work. Often times you can get it at horse stables. Your fiance could babysit in exchange for a room for two of you. Excellent experience for handling your future children, LOL.

For immediate expenses:

Sell your no longer used stuff on Ebay or through Craig's list. That can be done by your fiance once he's here...

See how you can cut your current bills in preparation for future tough times. You do not need the following: cell phone, cable TV and I-net. Yes, I mean it  You surely LIKE them, but you can use free I-net at your school and watch only the free off air channels. Surely you have friends who will invite you over if there is something you *must* see on the cable!

You can take a student loan, invest it for now into a CD account and use it when your fiance arrives.

Find out if you can add your SO to your student health insurance plan and how much that will be. If not possible, find out if there is free stuff offered by your university. If you have a Medical Department, there are likely times/places where one can get medical help for very cheap, because there will be medical students learning how to work with patients.

Don't eat out, instead learn to cook and learn where to buy food cheaply. Your fiance can take tips from you and do the actual shopping to help you. He can cook himself too, right?

Most of all, don't quit school for a low paying job. In the end - it is not worth it. Your student status gives you a lot of perks - cheap health insurance, discount public transportation etc. Learn how to live frugally instead. You can do it!

B) B) B)

Thanks for the real advice! I didn't post a question on here to be judged, just wanted to hear if there were others in a similar situation

bras suck!

I couldn't even walk around without a bra. I don't even go to bed without a bra.

I can sleep without a bra but otherwise they're mandatory attire.

I feel naked in public without one. At home, I mostly still wear one. It is comfortable and I don't even notice most of the time. I sometimes take it off in bed, but depends on how lazy I am. Some nights, I can't be bothered to even get that far. :help:

Doesn't someone else in bed object to said bra???

Frankly, I object to bras..and I'm a woman. I do not like being made to feel like I have to wear one, although I do. It's a self protection issue, frankly. Don't and you'll get disapproving looks and overt staring from the male population...ooh nipples...hey, not like other people don't have them ya know.

Yes, your clothes likely look better with a smooth silhouette and yes...the bra uplifts the 'girls' when they aren't so perky. but how come at almost 40 I have to pretend that my boobs look like they did when I was 20. How come softer and gently used by nursing children isn't sexy for my stage in life? I fed my kid with them for gawd's sake...shouldn't I get kudos for not filling up the local dump with extra plastic nottle liners??????

Anyho...rant done for a few minutes, anyway

Lisa apparently has a high standard of living.

There is nothing wrong with living at a stable with no cell phone, I-net and TV. Nothing! Unless it is a life that you consider "below" yourself. In which case you of course have to choose the secure road of money first, relationships later. In which case, unless your parents are rich and supportive, you just have to wait until you are in your 30s and well established. Which is okay too. Everyone likes his own kind of pie.

What would you tell your son if he were to come home and tell you that he was going to petition his foreign fiance and they were going to live in a stable with no cellphone, no internet, no tv. Or they were going to live in a church hostel while his fiance flogged his used goods on craigslist. Would you not want more for him?

I've never equated 'high standard of living' with not wanting to live in a stable w no phone or internet. But if that's what u want to call it, that's fine! I'm not going to apologise for wanting to live in an actual dwelling. since when did we celebrate mediocrity so much? why is the mesg 'oh live in a stable' when it could be 'get another job and plan'? this is not in ref to the OP as this thread is old, but I'm just speaking generally. As to the 'unless your parents are rich' comment, I have to completely disagree. I know MANY successful 20somethings. Hell, I was one! No, it didn't come easy, I busted my azz. But nowt good in life ever comes easy peasy. Just like now. I bust my azz for me and D...and he busts his for us. I am self employed, and have just found out the rate for adding D to my priv health ins....and its astronomical! honestly, its undoable. So the easy option is to just 'power thru' it and hope he doesn't get sick before getting EAD and getting his own thru work. But for me, its all about security...for me, and for him. Now I'm working a second fulltime job where I am eligible for a group plan. believe me, I'd so like to not have to do this...I am exhausted! but imo, skating by is simply not good enough. I'm very much a 'put on your big girl panties and deal with it' type.

I'm on the net thru my phone, so apols if this is coming out mucked up. I could type no more on that last post, so here's the ending. :D

my thoughts are for me and the way I choose to live....i don't understand how that can be taken as an insult to someone else. do what u want! live how u want! but if u ask my opin, don't be insulted when I say that living in a stable is simply not acceptable.
