Thanks for the replies, guys...

Some follow up: The dean told me that lunch detention wouldn't hurt the perps, and that he wanted to be in the classroom when I broke the news to them. So I did, without saying names. Two days... Then, the dean told me that he knew it wasn't part of my nature, but that I needed to learn to be mean sometimes. Puffff! I'm mean in my personal life, but I've never been mean when I teach... I hate to do that... I guess they're forcing me to... Bad news (or usual news?) is that the parents are furious because they don't believe their babies did anything wrong... I'm not surprised with that reaction though...

:) Cruel to be kind in the right measure.

Hang in there Cami.

I teach 12th grade usually, but this year I took an extra class for a colleague whose daughter was dying of cancer. Spanish I, 21 freshmen boys (13 and 14 year olds) and 4 girls. At first it was total culture shock to me, because my 12th graders are on a different level intellectually, and I hadn't taught Spanish in 2 years. It was supposed to be just for a quarter, so I pretty much just laid down the law from the beginning. They are rowdy and they are loud, but guess what? They are actually BETTER than a couple of my 12th grade classes!

Part of it may be the time of the year. I know I'm pretty much over teaching right now and ready for a break, so I can imagine how they feel :) But then again, if your kids are being just plain rude, that's not acceptable. I'm so glad you seem to have a great support network at your school though.

Don't worry about being "mean." You've been teaching long enough that you know there's a difference between being mean and just being stern. These little punks obviously need it :)

Screw the parents, though. Seriously. I hate parents like that. They're the same ones who say "why did you give my son an F?" I'm sorry, he earned that F!!! Apple doesn't always fall far from the tree.

Just a few more days and then a break! (F)

I went to college for four years to get a teaching certificate and after I did my student teaching I realized I didn't want to be a teacher and enlisted in the Marine Corps. That turned out to be a wonderful choice, the Corps put me in computers and it has been a very good career
