My advice is..... stop running!

You'll get that "Runner's Face" where you always look like you're in pain. I've never understood why so many people do something that makes them look like they hate life AND it tears the ####### out of you too. I recommend cycling, of course. Very easy on the knees, shins, and ankles. Plus, I hardly ever see someone frowning or looking like they hate life when they're riding a bike.

:lol: I know - you're right running blows! I also do the bike and the elliptical, but those don't give me as much of a workout. If I can't fix this problem, then I think I wills ####### it altogether though.

Mine are more along the front that I get. I think you want to replace your shoes. My dad, who coached track and cross country for 35+ years always told me to never skimp on the shoes! I think they will often be a problem when you start up but they should subside - I'd worry if they haven't after the first 2 weeks.

I also think most treadmills don't always have the best impact absorbtion. I don't run on them for that reason (although the ones at my gym are crappy) - I do walk briskly on an incline and get a great workout. I prefer running on grass or a proper track (or on the beach - although that's not an option for most people).

I was reading a bit online and I think that I "underpronate". The heels of all my shoes are only worn at the outer edges, so I'm wondering if that has to do with the particular pain I'm experiencing. I'm going to look and see what the best shoe is for this...

Go to a proper running store and not just the foot locker - one where they measure your feet and ask you to run in place and what not to see how your foot falls.

If you hate running though - you will probably get just as good a workout on the elliptical and it will be a lot easier on your joints/shins

Ok, thanks for the tips. I don't know, I'm torn. People keep telling me that the elliptical isn't nearly as effective as the treadmill. I feel that too - the elliptical just seems "easy" in comparison. Though maybe I'm mistaking bad pain for good pain when I run.

Exercise question.....

I've been doing the following treadmill workout:

Brisk five-minute warmup walk, then:

* Jog 1/4 mile (or 3 minutes)

* Walk 1/8 mile (or 90 seconds)

* Jog 1/2 mile (or 5 minutes)

* Walk 1/4 mile (or 2-1/2 minutes)

* Jog 1/4 mile (or 3 minutes)

* Walk 1/8 mile (or 90 seconds)

* Jog 1/2 mile (or 5 minutes)

I'm really having problems with this muscle though on the outside of my shins (tibialis anterior I think). It gets really sore when I do the walking intervals. I notice that it only starts to hurt *after* I run, when I slow down to a brisk walk. Then if I go even slower, it hurts more. I'm worried my form isn't great when running.

Anyone else experience this?

What has happened is that your calf muscles (gastrocs and soleus) are overpowering the anterior tibialis. This typically happens when an individual begins an exercise program or ramps up dramatically the distance.

the calf muscles respond much more quickly to the training than the anterior tib. causing the pain in the front of the shin.

google "shin splints" and you will find in home modalities for treating the shin splints.

Here are 3 links to help you get started:

Good luck with your training

Do it at a higher resistance level and I bet you will burn as many calories as running. I personally love the elliptical - I burn something like 700 calories in 45 minutes

I also heard a rumor that the elliptical overestimates your calories burned! Maybe treadmill companies have been planting little lies around the internet. :lol:

I do enjoy the elliptical much more.

I don't believe them 100% on calories burned no matter what the machine - but I definitely have got good results off it, and I think the enjoyment factor shouldn't be underestimated

I'm pretty accomodating, but my niceness stops when someone TELLS me what to do. I rebel against that and do the opposite.

I have a whole pineapple sitting on my table that I need to cut up. I LOVE pineapple

yeah I buy 1 and I cut in 4, divide them in 4 tupperware and take to work 4 days. I can't never divide in 5, too difficult and time wasting.

oh, and I have here at work cinnamon, cuz if I put cinnamon at home it turns to this weird looking thing by the time I eat it :P
