Sadly I only ever seem to find weight.

LOL For the past few years I seem to have had the same problem... a sad condition. :P

Last night I ate some chocolate. I think moderation seems to work better than Total Deprivationfest, although I can do that for a few months. It just inspires rebellion later.

I find that dieting has helped with my quitting smoking. One of my triggers was a nice, big satisfying meal. I haven't had any of those lately!

Whoa, I didn't know (for sure) you were quitting smoking! Congratulations! It's hard as hell! Also didn't know you were dieting either... I hope you're not giving up too many other things in life, geez!

Well, the thing with the smoking is that I don't intend to quit entirely, which is why I haven't talked about it really. I let myself have about 2 a week, and I've been very good about that for a couple of months now.

And my dieting isn't dieting so much as an attempt to change my habits entirely. Nothing is off limits entirely, I'm just cutting back on my portions and trying to eat more fruits and veggies. I can't imagine life as one of those people who can't eat certain things ever for fear of gaining weight!

So, in other words, I'm going to keep my vices, but just indulge less often...

I agree with that completely. You need to be realistic that never eating a brownie again is just not an option! Its the eating of the whole pan of brownies that must cease being an option! For me I just really need to make time for exercise. When I exercise, the pounds tend to go pretty quickly.

Ah, well that sounds good. May I ask, how do you decide when to have the cigarettes?

Me too. I still haven't found my exercise *groove* yet here in NY. There isn't a gym I'd want to join within 15 blocks (except my student gym, which I don't really want to use), and I just haven't decided how to work out here yet. I'm trying tapes at home, but it's not very satisfying. Why is it that group fitness at a gym can totally kick your ####### and a tape at home can only get you a little sweaty and then cool you down?

I have one on Sunday morning with my coffee (I look forward to that). And then one at a random time throughout the week when the mood strikes.

This kind of smoking is common in my family - we're mostly non-smokers who will light up on occasion, with a cocktail or something maybe. I keep hearing that it's not possible to limit oneself to a couple a week, but I think it's very doable.

Not for me, sadly. Last time I quit, back in October, I went without for over a month. Then one day on my way to work I got a VERY strong urge for a cigar. I don't even smoke cigars, generally. So, I bought a cigar. The next day it was 2 cigars. By the end of the week, I was smoking 5 cigars/day. Then I said "hell with it" (and Mags complained about the smell) so I bought a pack of cigs. When I had my last cig Monday night, I had been smoking a pack a day since mid-November.

There's no "one or two" for me with cigs/cigars.

Lady, people aren't chocolates. Do you know what they are mostly? Bastards. ####### coated bastards with ####### filling. But I don't find them half as annoying as I find naive bobble-headed optimists who walk around vomiting sunshine.

For Rey that "one or two" lasted for awhile ... like six months. Then it all fell apart and he started smoking again. This time he said he's not going to have any cigarettes at all. He's on Chantix though... I hope he's on it like forever because he's so cheerful all the time.

I hope I prove to have more self-control than Rey then!:P

What caused him to fall apart?

Oh yeah, I mean, everyone is different. In Rey's case, I think giving himself permission to smoke a few occasionally grew into a little more permission and then a little more permission. We moved to a new place so he made friends with some smokers and I think that led him to smoke more. The social aspect was strong.

Sometimes I wish I were a smoker for that reason; people in journalism seem to smoke an awful lot. It might help me meet other people...

I think your solution here is to take up drinking. Of course, this will not help your dieting efforts.

 Luckily I'm a cheap date.
