I LOVE my elliptical I got last year for Christmas. Even though I've only lost 15 pounds (better than nothing right?) my BMI has gone down into a healthy range, I feel 100% better and my diabetes is more gone!

I also started taking something called Symmetry about 6 months ago which I beleive has totally made a difference in how I feel. It's been talked about on the news and the Today Show! It totally detoxifies your cells. I can't begin to tell you the changes I've seen in myself and others since starting it.

I don't buy one because they're really pricey and I have access to the gym here on base for free. But if I had to drive to town and pay for a gym membership I'd strongly consider investing in one.

We got a very good deal on ours. It was the last model at Sears and a floor model. I was a bit hesitant on getting a floor model, but the department manager threw in a 1 year service plan. The machine we got was $1000.00, was on sale for $700.00 and we got an additional $200.00 of that! I've had gym memberships in the past and I knew if I joined again I would never go. It's kinda hard to go when you have kids, even where there is child care avaliable. My son loves to jump on it and go for 30 minutes or so on occasion and he needs as much exercise as he can get. (Not a very active child) I do want a tread climber though, but they're just way out of my price range right now.

I'm trying to convince Neil that we need more exercise equipment but he really isn't buying it. Since he isn't working right now either it's probably not a good idea to go spending money from savings on more exercise equipment. Maybe I can convince my mom she needs something lol. We're starting weight watchers tomorrow night so I'll let you all know how it goes when I get back!

Life is a ticket to the greatest show on earth.

Not necessarily true. If calories out are greater than calories in, you loose. They do not know what time it is. My fiancée has ate around 8 to 11 in the evening for her entire life. She has almost no visible fat whatsoever. When I moved to Russia, for a year, I ate with my fiancée between 9 PM and 11 PM every day. It had no effect what so ever on my weight. I stayed the same. Now if you are snacking, in addition to your normal meals, late at night, of course you will gain. You are probably now exceeding the balance. Losing fat still comes down to simple math. Make sure your overall calories out exceed your average calories in.

Eating after 8pm, or right before going to sleep, is one of the surest ways to gain weight.

It depends on what you eat and how much you eat, but as a general rule, if someone is wishing to lose weight - it's best not to eat anything at least 3 hours before bedtime.

Not every calorie is the same - that's what the conventional nutritionists are saying. Your body responds differently to 100 calories of fat vs. 100 calories from carbohydrates. Even the types of carbohydrates makes a huge difference.

I've heard both sides of this. About 2 years ago when I went to a dietican to help me figure out what kind of meals I could cook with my diabetes (I was soooo into pasta at the time) they said this was somewhat of a myth. That if you exercise and watch what you eat (healthy carbs) lean meat, etc, than you won't gain weight. BUT if you eat ice-cream, simple carbs, etc, that's when a person packs on the pounds because it's all turns to straight sugar. I was so worried, but by the time I get home, help kids with their homework, cook, etc....it's already 8:00pm! I thought I was doomed.

I will agree with that. Protein is not fat and neither are carbohydrates for sure. They all react differently in the body. Of course it is better to eat earlier for the sake of good sleep and digestion. But a lot of people can't eat early. There life and work schedules don't allow for it. I want those people to know, it is still very possible to loose fat and get into good shape even if you to have to eat very late. Just create an overall calorie deficit.

plus if you go to bed right after you eat and have your partner helping you exercising you can burn the calories :P

I have to agree. The "eating before bedtime and putting on weight" myth was disproved ages ago. What you shouldn't do is eat within ONE (not 3) hour(s) of going to bed, that HAS been proven to put on weight. So you can eat at 11pm, but if you go to bed at 12.30am you'll be fine.

However, if you have a lifestyle that isn't sedentary and eat healthily then it shouldn't really be a problem.

I'm faced with that dilemma during the work week when I usually am not home until after 8 at night. I'm starving by the time I get home. I try not to let myself get so hungry that I'll end up gorging and then fall asleep soon afterwards. Doing those two things has been the biggest culprit in me gaining fat. I also sleep much more soundly on an empty stomach. If I had my choice, I'd come home and eat a can of tuna with a little mayo and that's it.

Is it impossible for you to snack at work? If you have a healthy snack every 2 hours by the time you're home you won't be starving. Like fruits, or a low sugar cereal bar, a can of tuna (instant protein with at least half the calories of a protein bar)

Mags, you are right on with this and your 1 hour suggestion. I will also add to Sereia's post. Most Russians eat very late too (it's not just my fiancée). 9, 10, even 11 PM meals are usual. I never saw so many (excuse the word) normal bodied people.

To be honest, the secret is no secret. American's are just lazy. Fight for 15 minutes to park next to the door rather than walk 2 more minutes because you, well, have to walk. Drive-through fast food (you get fat twice). I could go on and on. My fiancée and most people in her country use their muscles (plenty of walking, more manual labour, less automation, children actually go outside and play)! Guess what happens when you do those things?
