Everything really, in moderation, is 'good' for you....potatoes included! Just remember that the stuff you add to it is more calories/points....sometimes even more than the potato itself! Especially that dreaded CHEESE!

Even after 10 years at this I still keep my 'red light' foods out of the house for the most part. I have a lot more control and make better choices BUT I am far from perfect. I post in my forum every day to keep myself accountable and I continually find new tricks that keep me on program each and every day.

I am a very plain jane and extremely picky when it comes to my food so it takes a lot for me to work out my meals and my absolute worst habit is not eating. You would think it would do you good and that you would lose more weight but that's simply not the case. Now, I carry a water bottle and kashi cookies or oatmeal bars around with me all the time. ;) There's a huge list of tips on the website if you're interested.

Nizzy, mashed turnips are actually pretty good if you also mash them with carrots. ;) Try that!

I think that if you work out a lot then certain things can still be okay to eat. Like potatos. Do you add an "e" if you pluralize "potato"? I feel so dumb right now and I have had my coffee...

Yeah - potato is singular, potatoes are plural ;) Although I do see potatoe quite frequently in the US so maybe it's just a different spelling there?!

I agree with the moderation thing but like I have said before, sometimes that doesn't work for me. Eating certain things (chocolate) will catapult me into eating ####### the whole day. What does work for me is to not keep myself hungry. Yesterday was a great day for me. Anytime I was feeling a hunger pang I would eat something healthy and keep myself full so that I didn't resort to eating the cookies in the cupboard. Also, at the end of the day I didn't feel like snacking. I am going to do the same thing today. It will be a little harder for me because I am going over to my mom's and they have all the bad snacks that you can name...like hot cheetos...yummmyy! I am thinking of taking a ziplock bag of carrot and celery sticks. Yes, I think I shall do that.

Oh and I was so grossed out by the turnips I don't know if I can muster up the courage to try it again...

Thanks Jeraly and Nessa...that's what I thougt but wasn't too sure...

Hot cheetos?! I never tried that... See that is going to be my problem I think - moving to a new place, wanting to try all these crazy things (well crazy to me anyway) I think I am going to *have* to join a gym just to keep my weight steady while I bore myself pigging out on all these new things! :D

Yes, Nizzy, you add an 'e'. ;)

In regards to your comment, I think it's important to note that what we look like on the outside isn't a true respresentation of what we look like on the inside. Just because someone looks healthy does not mean that they are. ;)

My father, who was a firefighter, ran 12 miles a day and did strength training/body building every single day for more than 30 years. To look at him ..he was the epitome of good health. Well he died at 51 of a massive heart attack. I found him. His heart was not healthy because he had a poor diet.

On another note, I started this journey around 400 pounds. My liver and other organs were suffering. After losing just 10% of my body weight all of my numbers came crashing down to 'normal'. After about 150 pounds and still well over 200 I was running 5 miles at a time and had the lungs of an athlete.

Looks can be very decieiving. ;)

Yes, Hot cheetos. Another one of my weaknesses...

KimandRuss: I agree with you. I know someone who looks healthy but they had a problem with high cholesterol...

And that's awesome that you went from 400lbs to what you are now...I like running so I really want to get into it again...

So chocolate is a red light food for you. It is for me too....especially certain times of the month! ;) Being aware and admitting to that is your first defense. There are some days having portions (point values) separated into baggies helps me keep a handle on it and some days i'll just keep opening new bags! So I get it out of the house. Watching yourself eat is a good tool...not always pretty! also waiting 10 minutes if you REALLY want something helps you to at least think about your choices more. Also, keep in mind that it takes your tummy 20 minutes to signal your brain that you have eaten. I know that for me and my mad rush of a life I would be done well before my brain new I had even eaten. So much has changed for me but I never forget or take it for granted that I have these tools because I know that I can gain it all back just as quick as I took it off. ;)

Yes chocolate is the trigger food. You are right about paying attention to what I eat. That is how I learned the having something sweet will ruin my whole diet.

I find dates can be a good substitute for choc/fudge - gooey and sweet and yummy :) Dried apricots are good as well for snacking :)

Prolly not the best question for the diet thread but how do you make hot cheetos?! I want to try!!

Am I the only one whose red light food is peanut butter? I totall lose control on that

And Nizzy, a good way for you to never be hungry is to eat all the time. Not kidding, but if every 2 hours you have a healthy snack you won't ever be hungry and jump on a huge plate of fattening food.
