Hello all, I am new to this website and have found it very useful with many tips and pointers. I live in California and my Fiance in Colombia. I am an American citizen. I am also a Colombian citizen by birth.

I need help on how to respond to question 18 on the the I-129F form. I met my fiance last month in person after months of talking on the phone and chatting online. I dont really understand what the question wants me to answer. "Describe the circumstances under which you met". What do I describe? If we met online? Did I go see her in Colombia? Or what we did while I was in Colombia with her?

Please help as I am stuck...almost like writers block. If anyone has any examples of what they wrote, please share.

Thank you,

Lucho

If you met online, just say that. Then include where you met in person.

Thank you for responding. This is what I have down so far.....

I met my fiance online in the month of April 2006. After months of long telephone conversations and chatting online, I traveled to Barranquilla, Colombia on August 24, 2006 to meet Wendy.

Is this enough? I think I need to put more but what?

So you were with another girlfriend on vacation and saw another girl and then this new girl became your fiancee? What happened to the first girlfriend? Did both of you eliminate her? Surely that doesnt sound fair.

I supplied 1 line.

"Met at linkin Park Show in San Diego. Allyson was working as local set up crew and Tim was working on the touring crew."

Additional supporting evidence was also supplied, a few examples:

Her pay stub from the day.

My tour shedule.

A notarised afidavit by petitioner summerizing our relationship thus far - in point form.

All the other ####### - photos, email, palne tickets, passport stamps, credit card receipts.

I left little doubt that we had met.

Still got an RFE - (requesting a copy of a passport stamp that I had already given them. UGHHH!)

How about:

I met my fiance, Wendy, online through (what? chat group? might cause IMBRA questions if not more specfic) in the month of April 2006. After 4 months of long telephone conversations, chatting online, and establishing a relationship, I traveled to Barranquilla, Colombia on August 24, 2006 to meet Wendy.

Might also want to add how long you visited. Be sure to copy your passport pages to send as evidence.

WHAT? Clearly, you are not paying attention.

On the planet you live on, are men typically named "Jen" and women named "David"?

Yes... you've got good specifics now. Just be sure to provide evidence of your trip with your petition. (You don't need the 'and' that I highlighted... just add a comma after 'conversations'. Reads a little better that way.)

Best wishes!

I wrote something very much like:

[The fiancé] and I ([my name]) met online in the chat room attached to an Internet-based computer game (at [games site]) in January of 2003. After chatting online and via telephone for over a year, [fiancé] came to visit me in [Caladan's swinging cribtown], [Calastate] in March of 2004. Two years and many visits followed, and on August 20, 2006, we became engaged.

I followed this with a more detailed timeline that corresponded to the evidence I presented.

Whilst some write a one line answer in response to Q18 and are subsequently approved; there are some that receive an RFE for a further statement of how they met in the required 2 year period that established the relationship.

Tip:

Use Q18 to describe in some detail in an attachment, of how you met in the required 2 year period that established the relationship. Then the evidence submitted should support those details. Boarding passes, passport stamps, hotel/credit card receipts, rental receipts if ever lived together etc etc are primary evidence. Photos are secondary which support the primary evidence. What one should be aiming for is creating an image in the minds eye of the adjudicator......a complete picture. Look outside the box for evidence that shows you both in the same place at the same time. Each case is different and one should submit evidence accordingly, not just rely on the standard unofficial list.

Whilst evidence of an ongoing relationship such as emails, chat logs, phone bills etc is not a requirement at the initial filing stage, it can be beneficial to those from high fraud countries (eg the philipines) to do so, or if there is anything that could be a red flag that may cause issues at interview stage. This evidence should always be very carefully scrutinised especially emails & chat, to make sure there is nothing mentioned that may be construed in a different way then it is meant.

If you just say that you met 'online' - expect an RFE like me, USCIS wants to know specifically where online you met, what chat room, was it an online dateing service etc. If it was an online dating serivce, then you need to check to see if it would be considered an "International Marriage Broker". In my case, I do not think IMBRA applied in my case, I wound up writing an explanation as to why, and including the contact information for the website in case the adjuticator thought otherwise.
