WASHINGTON -- Congressional Democratic leaders on Tuesday dropped their insistence that the Iraq war-spending bill include a timeline for U.S. troop withdrawal, clearing the way to end a lengthy standoff with President Bush.

The measure will include benchmarks that the Baghdad government must meet to continue to receive U.S. reconstruction aid, although the president will be allowed to waive those requirements.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., characterized the compromise as progress in the Democratic drive to bring the U.S. combat role in Iraq to an end, saying the bill was not a "blank check."

[...]

A number of strongly anti-war Democrats are expected to oppose the measure, so it will need Republican support to pass.

"There has been a lot of tough talk from members of Congress about wanting to end this war, but it looks like the desire for political comfort won out over real action," said Sen. Russell D. Feingold, D-Wis.

Now if this aint proof that the Dems are playing both sides of the coin, I don't know what is.

I think politics is just a dog-and-pony show that has all of us for mugs. Who knows what propelled this? Maybe some back door agreement like 'hey I'll give your amnesty for no war deadline' Cos I don't believe in coincidences.

You know what the definition of "politics" is? "Many blood-suckers".

I'm sure we all want them to come home...but there's a right way and a wrong way.

It'd be refreshing to hear someone (anyone) come up with an alternative to just abandoning Iraq (I mean a politician).

Build a time machine, go back to 2003 and not invade Iraq? That's my idea.

Tried that by paying a really useful guy called Saddam Hussein: He attacked them for us but was struggling so we gave him poison gas to drop on em and he used it - and he still couldn't win - heck those Persians are tough...

Perhaps the Pakistanis would do it ? ...nope Mushy-reefer has enough stached away now that money doesn't motivate him any more

oh well

something is bound to come up.. I know Tony ! oh no he is retiring....

some days you just can't get awar started....

A good place to start is the National Security Archive at George Washington University

which contains lots of declassified government documents.

still not definitive proof.

"we also know that iraq has acquired a cw production capability, primarily from western firms, including possibly a u.s. foreign subsidiary.

Ok.

The list of chemical agents sold by U.S. corporations to Saddam Hussein from 1985 to 1990

is included in the following Senate report:

"U.S. Chemical and Biological Warfare-Related Dual Use Exports to Iraq and

their possible impact on health consequences of the Gulf War."
