What also the article doesn't mention is that these employees will get a COLA (Cost of Living Adjustment) on Jan 1. I don't have any sympathy for them. If they wanted to make more money, they would work in private industry. Most government employees chose to work for the government for other benefits that are not provided by private industry: more holidays and other paid time off, job security, cost of living adjustments every year on top of your annual performance based raise.

This is private industry. They just happen to work for a contractor that has a govt contract to staff the mail rooms at the USCIS Centers and do the initial data entry.

They are not govt employees and do not get a COLA raise in January.

If I were them, I would be looking for employment elsewhere. I personally don't think it's fair, ESPECIALLY after the fees went so high up last summer.

This one is not hard to figure out, OUTSOURCING at its finest! This new company intends to weed out and get rid of the bad or weakest workers by doing this. Then they will slowly restaff with their own hires and own people. This will be interesting to see if this works well or not in a government setting.

ST. ALBANS CITY— Approximately 200 of the 400 employees at the Citizenship and Immigration Services service center in St. Albans will arrive at work on Monday, sit down at their desk, do the same job they did on Friday, and be paid $1.70 less an our for their work. Until Friday the service center was managed by a group of companies under the umbrella name of Services Center Operating Team (SCOT), including SI International. On Monday, Stanley Associates will take over management of two of the nation’s service centers in Vermont and California. SI International will become the prime contractor at the other two service centers in Nebraska and Texas.

Correct and by my calculation a clerk (GS-3) starting out with the gov't (before the '08 COLA) would be getting only $11.08 an hour....

I think they are LUCKY ENOUGH to even be getting a job.. there are lots of people without jobs.. so they should work hard to improve themselves.. haha, and this is from a government employee too.. I admit, sometimes we do get the time to relax some, but most of the time we work hard (even work hard in getting the job - interview).. so we are rewarded with a good paying job..

Even if they are working for an outsourcing company, they still get the benefit of a crapload of days off for holidays. I NEVER get MLK day or Pres. day of any of those "little" holidays that the government gets off.

And I agree with the principle of the work bonus. I used to work in a hospital in a department where a bunch of us did the same job. And I was ALWAYS doing jobs that others should have done, but didn't cause they were lazy. For about a year before I quit, I was doing my job, plus 25% of my supervisors job and wasn't getting any extra pay for the supervisors duties. Plus I was picking up slack for the lazy-bones also on my shift who wouldn't do their full job. I tell ya, it really sucks that someone is getting paid the same or more as you and you have to do your job AND theirs.
