I just spent a good portion of my 5 days in Canada with my in-laws. Then, first she tells me in her very broken English (and partly translated by my husband for my benefit, "You in Arizona now, now you learn espanish." (Yep, espanish). I said "You're in Canada for 15 years, you learn English." I am annoyed by that whole never learning the language thing and making your eldest child translate every single piece of mail and call and make doctor appointments and every-other-normal-day-to-day-function-that-requires-a-person-to-communicate-with-someone-outside-the-family things. I couldn't resist. My husband just gave me a look and changed the subject.

I cooked a big quasi-Thanksgiving dinner for everyone on Saturday and while we were eating, she started going on (best I could understand anyway) about how when my husband moves to the U.S. we can just take his little brother (still in High School) and he can go to school and live with us while so she and her husband can move back to Chile. We tried to explain about the BIL needing sponsorship and how I (the USC) couldn't sponsor a BIL and having to wait for hubby's citizenship before we could do much, and she just said, 'no, he go with you now!' and she practically has the BIL all packed and ready.

My only response equates to: "....."

She sounds like a nightmare BUT BUT BUT - I wouldn't really make fun of the 'espanish' - my husband says things like that too, because no word in Spanish can start with an /s/ blend at the beginning of a word it is preceded by an /e/. She should learn English, but an accent is an accent is an accent. Husband has been speaking English for a good while and that's one thing he can't shake because it's not natural for him to have an /s/ blend at the beginning of a word without the vowel helping it out.

On that token (and how did I end up in the Canada forum?), I get annoyed when I see little kids having to translate everything for their parents, which turns into a life long battle for them. My MIL doesn't speak English (and is going back to Peru soon) but she never had to work or do much of anything that required it. She does try, but at 60 years old it's a little harder than it would have been at 20 or even 40. And she hasn't been in an English speaking country for 15 years either...only 5 and rarely has to use English where we live.

My in-laws are alright. I mean they are very nice with me, but I just don't like to see all the hypocrite stuff that they say behind the other's back. Huge story behind that, but it's annoying sometimes. And so far they just seemed to be annoyed because me and Josh are always together and do everything together. My FIL even had to change one of his laws about the garage, about women aren't allowed in the garage....but when I started working with my husband on his car he had to back up, cause I work on cars and I like it...I even fixed his pop machine....

My MIL is just like my mom, but in English, and I wish my mom and her could talk because they would get along pretty good together, but my mom only speaks French.

Other than that, the only really annoying thing about them is that when we bring the kids to their place, they just want to please them and even if we say no for them to drink pop for example, they will give them some 5 min after. The kids already don't have much of a structure with their mom, and when they are with us they have simple rules to follow and it usually works like a charm at home, but they become frenzy monsters when they are at their grandparent's house. If we say no to something they will go ask them behind our back and of course they say yes to anything, and seriously we cannot stand that. They were very strict with their own children and my hubby doesn't get why they are acting like stupid like this with them. I mean come on you don't give candy to a 3 yo at 8 pm at night when it's almost bedtime. And when we work on the car we usually go on the week-end where we dont' have the boys, then his parents give us ####### because they want to see them, but when we bring them, first thing you know is the 3 yo is walking around the garage outside on his own, and then my MIL text message my husband on his phone to ask if we have seen the little one...like #######!!!!!! We cannot even trust them to look after them....

So they are nice, but we hate bringing the kids there. And since it's 3 hours away we usually stay for at least 2 days.

And of course, Thanksgiving was a pain for us so we came back early saturday, and for some reason the kids were angels until sunday night! So 2008 will be their mom's year for the holidays and it's gonne give us a break.

An old roommate has a great story of travelling in Central America, and having a cab driver, excited to learn that she was American, talk about his favorite musician, "Esnoop Dogg."

Now I feel totally bad for ragging on my MIL... yesterday she came in to talk to me about my student loans. She basically told me that they wanted to help me pay for them if I wasn't going to have my EAD by the time my six-month grace period ends in March. I was like, "...I feel so bad for hating on you sometimes!" (L)

I just found out my MIL grills my son when I am not around, asking him tons of questions like what how I feel about things, or what I say about her.

So I told my son I THINK I'm pregnant with twins. And we're moving to China because we like the weather there.

Awww.

If it's anything like our process, you'll be getting the AOS in no time! (Before the EAD even.)

Uhm...husband's mother is very overbearing to put it politely. I like the woman - we have a lot in common and she goes out of her way to be nice to me - but she snaps at everyone in the family & is always so stressed out. I come from a very dysfunctional family myself, and the tension of being in the house with his family is almost too much for me. His mom is always snapping at his poor hen-pecked dad; and his sisters are always screaming at each other and at his mom. (One time his mom had to go to a motel to get away from his sisters!)

Anyway. Okay. His mom. It's our first Christmas as a married couple and she's flying him back home for it! On top of making for a lonely Christmas, there's no way that he'll get hired for a quickie retail job to bring in a couple of bucks (we need the money) because he'll be gone for the week around Christmas. She's also the one who insisted on using her air miles to fly down to see us sign the marriage documents at the courthouse. This made it impossible for us to file before the fee increases...

I guess the whole thing would be moot except that she keeps hinting at my husband to find a job. We delayed filing for her and now that he has his green card, his job chances are significantly narrowed because she wants him home for Christmas!

I know I'm resurrecting an old thread, but I have to get this off my chest.

While baking pumpkin pies for Thanksgiving, I brushed the back of my arm against the oven door and lightly burned it. My mother-in-law, who has a tendency to freak out about every little health-related issue (*ahemhypochondriacahem*) wouldn't stop pestering me to get it taken care of. I finally put some ice on my arm just to make her stop nagging at me -_-

This might seem trivial, but Bee had surgery on Friday for a minor hernia and spent the morning in the hospital. My mother-in-law was with me. She was upset at the people that were yapping away behind us (granted, they were a prayer circle - can you believe it?! ) and couldn't stop muttering curses at the people that had their cell phones ringing. I wanted to crawl under a chair and cry from the stress of it all.

The rest of the week was spent fussing over Bee and getting pissed at him for walking around the house. We were both like, "It's doctor's orders for him to walk around so that things can get better." It was just one thing after another - does he need ice for his teeny incision, don't walk, don't get out of bed, don't do this, oh I get sick on this type of medication so tell your doctor to prescribe you another one, take another pill.

The worst part is that she's like this all the time. I don't know how Bee's dad deals with it - after two minutes of listening to her complain about her aching head and how she had to take codeine pills at work that day, I have to leave the room. Part of it is me refusing to be dependent on any type of medication unless it's absolutely necessary.

Oy, I love her and she has the sweetest heart, but what kind of fit is she going to have when I have babies... :(

Nini, bubbellah, having a bit of fun with the shviger? That goyishe kupp of yours will soon get with the program. Everytime your dear shviger says something, just say, "A bei gesunt." Well I'm sure the kiddies will have fun with their bubbie.
