When does OHIP coverage end?

OK, I confirmed with my employer that Kristy's coverage would be effective on the date of our marriage, and not when the paperwork is turned in (as long as I turn it in within 30 days of the marriage). But, what about coverage for the four or five days after she moves here, but before we get married? Would OHIP cover anything here in the States, or should she get travel insurance or something?

OHIP will cover her for an 'emergency' if one occurs. You would basically pay for the 'emergency treatment' first then attempt to get the money back from ohip unless she is covered by a health plan through an employer that offers out of province coverage. I believe you are still covered for 3 months after your departure from ontario 'legally' with OHIP. Technically you are supposed to let OHIP know you've moved to another country so they can cut you off. I deal with people all the time that have been living in the US for many years that still use valid OHIP cards *shrug*

After it expires, and u go back to canada, ur on ur own!! Ur USA medical coverage should cover it, but best to check with ur USA provider. As a non-resident of canada, ur not entitled to "free" medicare. Your no longer paying taxes to Canada, so that makes sense!!

Yeppers, I went to the emergency room on Boxing Day 2006 with a gall bladder attack and I couldn't get looked at until we ponied up $400. And then I received another bill a couple weeks later for another $400.

Once you are no longer a resident of Canada, it's no more free health care for you!

Even if you do pay taxes in Canada you are not entitled to it unless you make Canada your primary residence. Varies by province but usually have to be physically present in Canada for at least 6 months of the year. I stil pay income tax, property tax and sales tax (do majority of my shopping in Canada) but am not "entitled" to Manitoba Medical. It totally pi$$es me off.
