SSN adventures

Bee and I drove out to West Chester this morning so that we could order certified copies of our marriage certificate from the Chester County courthouse and order my SSN right afterwards. Since I was fretting about whether I was going to be able to get my SSN in my married name, I went armed with half a tree's worth of SSN documentation highlighted in the appropriate places. The county clerk who helped us with our certified copies told me that my married name was completely fine and she hoped that the SSA branch didn't give me trouble. Me too!

The SSA branch we went to smelled like pee, which wasn't fun. One of the ladies who'd been behind us at the courthouse showed up at the office, and when she heard she needed to do an application to change her card to her married name she had a spaz attack at the officer. Bee was trying really hard not to laugh at her because she was freaking out about how the courthouse hadn't given her all the necessary documentation - all she needed was an SS-5 form which the officer gave her.

We got escorted into another part of the building, and as soon as the clerk found out that I was a "foreign-born" applicant she had to call over one of her other colleagues. The name change didn't faze either of them, so I'd killed half a tree for nothing :( but when it came time to electronically approve the application, they found out that I'd been inserted into SAVE as a Y1 visa instead of a K1  I didn't even think that was possible! The SSA people asked whether the guy at the POE had looked at my sloppy I-94 and put me under a different visa category, but I told them that he was the only one who'd processed my documents and had been the one to lecture me on the K1 details. So they gave me the "well we're going to have to verify your documents" spiel and assured me it wasn't going to take any longer than four weeks.

I'm really happy that the processing itself went by really smoothly, but man did it piss me off to find out that the POE officer put me in the system incorrectly. I'm hoping that it won't be too much hassle for them to fix it, since I can see so many things going wrong because of it. -_-

Unfortunately, it appears like some of the officers didn't pass 3rd grade for the writting and reading lesson

Just like that guy in Montreal that sent me a notice for an unpaid parking ticket....that was written 1 month after I had sold my car and the license plate was in my document folder

I hope they get it sorted for you soon enough!

Meanwhile I found this the Y-1 "temporary" nonimmigrant nonagricultural worker program

No kidding, Mephys! I even looked at my keyboard today thinking the POE officer had mistyped it... um, no. Talk about mistaking a fiancée for something else altogether...
