I never was when i received it back in 2005.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

No, I haven't been either. I was getting EI for one month prior to my I-94 expiring. Then, it started up again the beginning of September, after my GC. I'm kind of freaked about being asked. Firstly, they said that they could ask for it at any time, and that I should keep a list, of place name, position applied for, date I sent in resume etc. Secondly, they said I should be submitting applications/resumes at 3-5 places a week. I replied...Wow! I'm concerned because I was told by EI staff that I wasn't expected to take a job that was significantly lower in wages than what I was making in Canada. Now, I was employed by the Gov't. for 26 years in Canada...so I don't think I"m going to find a job here in that range. (US wages are much lower in my opinion anyway...at least in St. Louis).

I said, if that was the case, there was no way I could apply for 3 to 5 jobs a week...that there was just not that many jobs available that paid that kind of money. She said not to worry, that I would just need to show that I was applying for "similar" types of work and wages. Well, I can tell you...there have been very few. I guess if they asked me, of course I'd send them what I have. If they thought I was not looking strongly enough, then I would hope they'd tell me this before just cutting me off or at least tell me what new expectations they have.

Here in Indiana, to even get a check every week you have to submit a card (mail or online) that lists 3 places you've applied to, their address, and how you contacted them. There are no "surprise" audits, because you have to have already submitted the info to have gotten a check.

Oh, and you gotta go to "training sessions" when they tell you - learn how to look for a job, take a skills test, etc.

A check for what? Is this employment insurance in the UK? Nice that they have that there as well then.

I don't know about "training sessions". Who's putting these on?

I would second to that. I mean I tried to make few applications for jobs that were way under the average I was making, and did go to an interview for one of them thinking I could spend my time at least doing something. I kinda felt stupid when they asked me what kind of schedule I was looking for schedule/salaray wise... Like I will stop my EI for a part time job that pays 4$/hours less than what I am getting with the EI...

Neways, like Carla, I have a list , adresses, but there is no way I have 3-5 applications for every week. Laboratory jobs in my field aren't raining out there....

Carla, I know that you worked in a really specialised field in Canada, but you may also want to look at places like monster.com for semi-close out of state jobs to add to your list.

UK? No, I'm the USC.

Who puts on the training sessions? The Indiana Department of Workforce Development. In Indiana, of course. If I had failed to attend one of these things, my unemployment would have stopped.

Ahh, U.S. UNemployment is different than Canadian EMployment Insurance, and requires a job search verification to collect. Had me confused there for a bit... :help:

My mom does seasonal work and she collects EI briefly in the summer (along with the rest of her coworkers in the field). No one in their right mind would hire them during the downtime but EI always requests job search proof (denial letters etc).

Maybe it's just the type of work requires it and for immigration they don't care. *shrug*
