Getting my U.S. driver's back

So, I was a licensed driver in Minnesota for 20+ years. I move to Toronto and while there, my MN license is coming close to expiring so, since I had every intention of living out the rest of my days in Canada, I renewed my license in Ontario. I only had to show my soon-to-be expired MN license, take a vision test and away I go with an Ontario license with 4 stars. I couldn't get insurance in Canada (but that is a whole other story).

Now that the whole living-in-Canada thing has gone to hell in a hand basket, I am back in the U.S. and need to get an AZ license. I called the AZDOT and was informed I have to take the written test, even though I have my driver's license extract from MN showing I had a valid license (with not one single driving infraction in my whole illustrious driving career). The worst part is they don't take appointments for the test, you have to show up early and wait until your lucky number is called.

So far, license exchange is one of the few things I found to be easier in Canada then in the U.S. Chalk one up for the Canucks!

I've noticed that depends on the State. There are quite a few states that will switch the DL over with just an eye test instead of the whole deal. There are, however, states that require the WHOLE deal including the written, eye, AND road test! I'm moving to one of those states! Idaho's just lucky it's beautiful! ~giggles~ I'm not looking forward to it, but hey, I'll do what I've got to do right?

Poor Bren had to take the driver's exam.... even when he as also previously licensed in Utah and Oregon. Sux.

Yeah, it seems to be state dependant since Derek just had to take an eye test. Which he almost failed because he was too vain to put on his glasses.

Course since he is on a CR1 his VA license expires the same time his conditional green card does. Which means that he will have to get it renewed in December. And since he probably won't have his green card by then, they will probably only renew it for a year, which means he will have to go back to the DMV next December too, grrrr.

every State has different rules..... here in California i had to take the eye exam, the written test and the road test....
