Thought I'd drop on by the Canada board and say hi!

I'm from Brantford, Ontario....

Anywho! :hehe:

Question about the interview for the K-1 Visa...

I read on here that my significant other is able to come with me to the interview but is he actually allowed in the room where they sit you under a bare bulb and grill? LOL  j/k..I know it's not that bad.

Thanks :)

yep USC can attend interview!! Usually for Cdns its the easiest part of the process!! Its normally very quick as well, in and out as if ur at macdonalds!! See u hired a lawyer!! Wish we had found VJ prior to hiring ours!! Much more info on here, lol and saved many thousands of $$$. Best of luck

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Yeah..we have found a laywer but haven't really committed anything with him yet (ie. PAID HIM!) and so..it's not final yet. I still have to wait on my flipping divorce papers so....

You never know. He feels more comfortable using a lawyer...I just get so nervous that we'll mess something up....

We have a couple of months before we can file so...I'll think it over about going it just the two of us!

Thanks everyone for the warm welcomes!!!!

Belive me a lawyer in most cases is NOt called for!! Wont speed things up, just lessens ur bank account!! You can find most of the info here on VJ!! Take ur time and read over the K1 stickies. Its pretty straight forward, even with a divorce!! laywers dont really do that much of the work! YOU stil have togather up the proper paperwork (long form birth cert, police report, divorce cert) and fill out the paperwork! They are just $$$ proof readers, in my opnion! Ours cost us $2500! ouch! Then she emailed us and asked if we wanted her to file the I-751 (for 10 yr greencard) No thanks, lol Took me all of 10 minutes to do it myself!! Best of luck

I agree with Flames. If it's a straightforward case you don't need a lawyer. Save your $$ for the AOS process. It's not just you who may mess up. There are all kinds of stories about the lawyers messing up too.

Welcome to the Canada Forum Laura! You don't need a lawyer. You have us!

Agreed with others too about not needing an immigration lawyer for straightforward cases. Even with divorces and kids it's still "straightforward". Definitely save up your bucks for AOS and moving costs!

Since you're waiting for the divorce to be final, spend some time reading over the forms, guides, FAQs, flowchart, etc. It seems overwhelming at first so if you're overwhelmed, stop reading and pick it up the next day. Soon it will just "click" and everything will make sense and you'll be glad you didn't spend the extra money on a lawyer. :) Seriously, when I first started reading this stuff I was soooo confused and then it just all made sense.

Yeah another online game love story!! ( we met in WoW)

I was just like you in the beginning thinking of a lawyer before I found VJ.....I agree with the others, save yourself a lot of money and read, its a very helpful website.

I am now in the US waiting for my Green card, and I have never spoke to a lawyer! The K-1 isn't that complicated if your case is pretty simple. And us too had a divorce in our file.

Read the guides, check around, and you'll see!!! :)

Lot of resources on VJ such as :

-stickies at the top of each forum with lots of great info

- you can ask all the FREE questions u want

- Use the search engine (it sort of sucks) but 99.9% chance that question has been asked before

- In gallery examples of already filled out forms!!! or is it in Example Forms??

-Embassy/consulate reviews at the top

Save the $$$$ and just use VJ.

Between VJ and the USCIS website, we kicked butt! However, it is up to you whether or not a lawyer will make you feel more comfortable. If you do go with the lawyer, make sure you have one who is familiar with spousal / marriage-related visas, and make sure you read up and are completely familiar with the process, so you can keep a close eye on what your lawyer does -- it may save you from mistakes and heartache later.

Welcome to VJ and welcome to the Canuck corner!! :)
