In Brazil I was an attending doctor, here I'm a intern without any expectation to become a resident anytime soon or a doctor in any near future. That's how I feel about my job. Of course I'm not in the medical field, but it's a pretty decent example.

Wow! Sorry to hear that. Was the career change because of "red tape" in the US or a personal choice?

It was not a career change, I am in the same field, just with a way lower position than the one I achieved in Brazil.

And it was not a choice, it's because of the language barrier, because I don't have any experience working in the States that I can prove to them I'm capable to do the job. I speak pretty decent english, but I could never find a job in a high position here. So I had to start all over again, as if I've never worked before, as if I have no college education or I'm 17 all over again. oh well.

I hear about lots of people coming to the States sharing the same problem I have. Women with law degree that only finds job as customer service, women with 10 years of experience in administrative field finding job as assistants or receptionists or clerks, or having to work with retail. So I'm not alone. I can't complain.

Unfortunately Craig can't work in watersports, since the nearest water is 2 1/2 hours away. He got "into" warehousing jobs and has done a ton of different jobs with the 3 temp agencies he worked for. His favorite "job" was building blackboards for schools. Now he's a water bottling company and loves it, but eventually he wants to get into A/C type of field.

How come more people didn't answer this one? I just saw it this morning.

Andre was a bartender in Jamaica. A good one, too. Bartending jobs were few and far between and he was only interivewed for one. After two interviews for that same job, he never heard from them again.

Soon, we were in more desperate need of money then usual and on a fluke, he applied at Jack-in-the-Box. He ended up getting the job that day and starting the next. He's been there almost 10 months now and has had 2 raises. He was promoted to shift leader in August, got his own health, dental, eye, and life insurance in October. He is in the beginning stages of training for assistant manager. In about 4 more months or so, he will apply for that. And, he's talking and eyeing training for store manager. All I asked was that he stay at this job, any job he has, at least a year to gain some US job experience for his resume. The results have been a refreshing change from what luck we usually encounter.

I'm kind of anxious to see what his raise is for assistant manager and then manager. His current manager has worked at Jack in the Box for 15 years......It must pay well enough to stay on.

He's very personable and dependable and he learns quickly. Plus, I think he may be one of the oldest of anyone even remotely eligible for the positions. Whatever it takes.
