Tried to use my CDN Sears Card today

So today was Sear's Labor Day sale (60% off the lowest sale price on clothing), and I made my way to the counter like dozens of times before here in CT and plunked down my CDN Sears card. The lady swiped it and had a "call for authorization" message come up on her machine. She called the support line and they told her they don't accept CDN Sears cards. I said I've used THIS card in THIS store many times before, but she didn't care, and kept saying "we do NOT accept this card".

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! I left the store (and all the clothes I was going to buy) I was so frustrated!!! I tried to call the CDN line to say "they refused my card", but of course they are on holiday today. But my card is in good standing, there's no balance on the card or anything!! GAH!

Anyone else having issues?

Had the exact same issue when we were in Maine. That was in 2005 and it looks like nothing's changed. This never used to be a problem with a Simpsons-Sears card, go figure.

I never tried to use my Canadian Sears card in the States - since it was based in Canada and the fees paid to a Canadian financing company, I didn't think that they were compatible. Sorry, I guess I can't help.

Hmm... I have been doing it since February here in our town at the same store..

The card has never been questioned, never been turned down until today.

You can't use a CDN Sears card in K-Mart like you can a US Sears card.. and as I found out a month or so, not in a Sears Auto Center, but you are supposed to be able to use it in the Sears Dept Stores US wide.

When I was in SC almost 10 years ago I always used my Sears card as well..

I know that SHELL has real issues with using "international" cards. My Chase card causes all sorts of problems at the gas station down the street. I've never had a problem with CIBC VISA in the US but I've never tried it at SHELL. What I don't understand is that Shell is Royal Dutch Shell out of Amsterdam so why should they have an issue when Petro Canada doesn't.

So..

Just called Sears Canada and there WAS some tomfoolery going on!

They had added random #'s to my Zip code and mail they sent to me was returned to them undeliverable - so they automatically shut a card down when that happens!

SO.. the girl was wrong about them not accepting the card - the CDNS HAD shut the card down! Which is strange cause I have gotten Sears Canada mail here in the US to this address before.. I have NO idea how that address got changed!

Anyway, the card is fixed and I can use it again here in the US (although NOW the sale is over).

Grrr...

I was just thinking while I was reading this post...

I'm doing everything as fast as I can to convert money to USD and have it transferred through Custom House down here to my bank account at the Bank of America. I now do my day-to-day banking through Bank of America using the VISA "Check" card. Of course, I have no US credit yet, but plenty of Canadian credit on hand if needed in an emergency, but at this point now, I have no need for US credit since I am unemployed waiting for my AOS/EAD.

The reason why I'm doing that is that all my CDN credit cards were charging service fees up the yin yang... lousy exchange rates compared to Custom House, etc. So, as a result, once I had money down here, I paid off the CDN credit cards with what I left in Canada and leaving them at 0 balance.

I would think, and given my history with the Sears card, that using a CDN Sears card in the US is fraught with expensive service fees and lousy exchange rates?

Just a thought...

Scott.

June 11 - Biometrics appointment letter mailed out (June 30 at 1PM)

June 30 - Biometrics.
