My daughters have decided they want to surprise DH as we dont know when he will step foot in America, by learning Arabic. We went to the library and got out what the librarian thought was a great book, ok turns out not so great....

Are there free sites online that combine sound and lessons?

I like this site, Sara. The pronunciation is a little different from the Egyptian accent, but the lessons are thorough ( I think ) . Thanks for posting it.

You can download this site for free. Comes with "flash cards" and little tests to do online. LOL I thought it was fun to do in my spare time, tho my kids kept asking me what I was trying to do. They have a ton of languages you can choose from.

What I would be interested to know is what dialect of Arabic the Jordanians use. That would be helpful to know when learning Arabic since every country has their own dialect, right? Also, I bought the book, Arabic for Dummies, which was helpful to some degree, also Nogomi's music website, you can listen to the songs and read the words as you go along, makes it easier to understand the sounds that are represented by numbers.....LOL

But, to be honest....after all this time....I can still only say....bathroom, tea, bear, cheese, and thank you in ARABIC!!!! LOL

i get confused about the different accents as well...i bought a book and wanted to surprise my husband too...sent him a text message in arabic....he called back and was giggling and saying oh that was so cute and sweet--it was egyptian accent, but it was so sweet of you....they should really specify...i did see the different book that said morroccon arabic, gulf arabic and then one just said arabic...so that is the one i got...oh well

Wow, Tammy! That site is great. I have already started testing myself. That's the way I like to learn. I like to have a gague of my progress.

The Jordanian accent is a lot like that of Palestine. Villages have their own regional peculiarities, but overall the accents of Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and Palestine are very similar and can generally be easily understood among each other -- it's called the al Shaam accent. I think if you look around (check your local Borders) you can find a CD series specializing in the Jordanian accent -- usually the description will say if it's the Egyptian accent or Gulf or whatever. I used to have one called Just Listen n Learn on cassette tape. It was hosted by a Palestinian teacher, and used a lot of Jordanian speakers.

It's a great idea for you and your kids -- good luck !

Ok I have to tell everyone I am very hard of hearing. My daughters were trying the words and phrases and laughing like crazy... mysalami is what i said... ok the phrase sounded like it (good bye) and I HAD THE GIRLS LAUGHING ALL OVER THE PLACE. Then came alsayeed well darn that is what it sounded like to me, (sir) again more laughter and they said come on mom say it right,,, try HARDER we want you to say , Hello Mr O when you call tonight.... Ok Ok I have tried. I spent the last hour trying. I think it might take me a week to get it right... !!!!! DH aught to laugh like crazy over this.

I just wanted to add a little something to this. (I hope u don't mind)..

For those of us with Jordanian SO's, Al Shaam accent is definitely understood in Palestine, Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan. He said that if you want to get technical with the accent of Jordan.... The accent "Al Horani" is used in Northern Jordan (Amman and up) and in Southern Syria. He said that the Southern portion or Jordan (South of Amman) has an accent similar to the Bedouin. I don't know if there is any way to find an Arabic course that teaches Al Horani accent but if any of u find it... let me know~ k

I want to surpize my husband with speaking little more arabic then the words I already now, lol which isn't much. He will be coming at beginning of October, finally. I love pimsleurs egyptian arabic CDs..... my SO actually understands what I'm saying.

Now all his cousins and friends want to talk to me and hear all the new words I learn - they always laugh when I mess up a word and make sure I learn how to say it correctly

you can on limewire and download them for free. Its file sharing. it is the best ive found. Nothing as far as reading letters but teaches you pronunciation very well and very slow. I really really really like it!
