So yesterday my Sister (who lives in small town Nebraska) goes to pick up her Son from school.

While she is sitting there waiting, another car hits her Jeep and breaks the back tail light.

So the person comes out and gives her the insurance card and her phone number and my Sister notes this and leaves. Also, the insurance card had expired in September and when my Sister questioned her about it the girl said - oh, just forgot to put the new card in the car.

She goes to call the person and the number is not valid (I think after she called the insurance company and found out there was no insurance renewed in September).

Long story short, she calls the police and they track down all the people involved. The registration/insurance person - Susan - sold the car to the passenger in the car, who could not register it or insure it because she has no license - so Susan took care of this for her, but they could not afford to renew the insurance.

Everyone got tickets and they all have to go to court. The driver of the car was the passenger's 15 year old daughter (who also had no license) - they also had two elementary school aged children in the vehicle.

Oh and of course my Sister now has to pay for the $200 repair. Some people.

Congratulations Laura!!!!

People's internal body temperature/comfort levels seem psychological.

Yes!

I have noticed how the mind has a lot to do with how cold or hot we feel.

Some of these posts really made me laugh as it showed how that is true.

Hee, hee.

"Storm of the century" sells ads.

And so, news really love this kind of shiiit.

Scare the people.

How fun!

Oh, I am being facetious.

The thing is, weather is weird...true.

And most of us have been through snow and it is perfectly normal; so why do people allow the media to freak them out?

Hmmm...a lack of memory?

A lack of confidence that they will live through it?

The store may run out of food?

Bah!

I remember when I was living on a Gulf Island in BC and the ferries went on strike, cutting us off from the mainland.

I had no idea...the two stores that had food, did run out.

And so...just as my cupboards were about to go bare and my flight (visit) to Montreal was coming up, the ferries came back.

Here I was new to the whole scene and looking to talk to the locals about anyone who might have a boat to take me across Georgia Strait!

It was disconcerting to say the least.

The day my flight was, the ferries came back.

Phew.

So, having provisions in case of an emergency is something to do way before something "bad" comes up.

Lesson learnt.

I have been "enjoying" listening to NPR this week around the news of blatant Illinois governmental corruption.

http://www.wbez.org/CityRoom.aspx

Not only did he try to sell Obama's seat to the highest bidder, but he would not release/sign a check to Chicago's children's hospital for $8 million (I believe) until he was given $50,000 first (maybe it was more?)!!!! Crazy!

No one seems too surprised at this horrid news.

Another day.

If people start getting thrown into jail and not being let out right away, then maybe others will fear doing the same.

It is too cold to even think of going outside here today, and I have a date with my sweetie at some fancy schmancy Italian restaurant tonight.

I'm supposed to meet him there.

The $200 she has to pay is for the repair to the vehicle. The police officer said she could take the people in the other car to court and win - but it would be a waste of time as they have no money.

Oh, and when the 15 year old was questioned about the accident, she tried to tell the officer that my Sister had backed in to her

Man!

An corrupt Illinois politician, imagine that. My parents call Rod the "stupid good-looking," I call him other things but the line starts at idiot, moron and a few other choice words. Big Bill Thompson, the infamous mayor of Chicago comes to mind, oddly Thompson also had a dislike for The Tribune. Any politician that can make the Daleys (pere et fils) look like saints has got to be pretty twisted and Hot Rod is that. The news media is always great. I do agree with that whole "if we don't stock up now, we're going to die" mentality shocks the conscience but not for something as noble as informing the general public. A few ratings' points or a few more papers sold in exchange for peace of mind, what's wrong with this equation? One person gets a disease and suddenly there's an outbreak. BTW, Spirit, did you stock up on hovercrafts just in case there's another strike?

Trailmix, I feel sorry for your sister, my brother had the same kind of thing happen in Arizona. Some teenage freakshow decided that he was going to pull over on the shoulder and then get back into traffic without looking to see if any traffic was coming. Bro' was on call, driving the Tahoe to the hospital and figured that the idiot had no insuance and by the time a cop showed up in the middle of the desert, it was probably better to forget filing a claim. Bro's insurance would probably jack up his insurance premium in any case. Your sister got off lucky, she wasn't hurt, bro' ended up paying $1700 for the repair. :wow:

That's terrible Em!! Stupid drunk drivers. I have a rule that, even if I only have 1 drink - I will not drive. I figure if you are not at 100% you shouldn't be driving. Your poor Aunt!

This is the second time this has happened to them in Nebraska. A couple of years ago a bus driver hit them (in a parking lot). They exchanged details - no problem. When she called the bus company, the driver denied ever having hit them.

Yes, she is lucky it is only a $200 repair for the tail light cover. I'm glad all of the people got tickets and that now, hopefully, these people won't be driving around. As I mentioned, she lives in a small town and the Police Officer said they will be keeping an eye on them to ensure they are not out driving.

I feel so sorry for your aunt. I was hit by a drunk driver a while back, all it cost me was my Achilles tendons but at least I can still walk. He backed out of his driveway and pinned me against my car and the three of us moved down the street for 30 ft. before he figured out he had hit me. I once had a drunken truck driver w/o a license make a lane change and his tractor-trailer ended up in my lap but I was lucky, no serious injuries. If I was in a small car I would have been crushed to death. Scary stuff.
