Ok phew! I was starting to get a little worried about this.

How long is the visa stamp in your passport good for? 5 or 6 months??

If we filed EP and stated that my green card was to mailed to my us address, do I still have to chase it once I'm there??

I'm really counting on being able to collect EI for a while at least.

The visa stamp is for 6 months from approval.

When you filed the DS260, you requested the Social Security card, not the green card. The green card process is separate and you chase it before you cross the border.

You'll get the instructions at the interview, but essentially the page states how to pay the USCIS Immigrant Fee ($165.00):

-go to www.uscis.gov/uscis-elis and log on to USCIS ELIS and select 'create a new account', then fill the fields completely and accurately.

-select benefit type ie 'USCIS Immigrant Fee' from a drop down menu on the 'step-by-step online application' page.... entering your A-number, and case number from the embassy (i.e. MTL2014...)

-enter payment information..

Be sure to print out the confirmation page just in case

I paid mine online July 12, have since gone back into the ELIS account to update my physical address as I'm of course in the US now. A recent call to DHS at 1-800-375-5283 confirmed that there is a back-log in sending green cards out and I can hope for it's arrival in the next week or two even though I crossed at POE July 23rd, and the original estimate was for arrival within 60 days from that date.

My Social security card arrived without any chasing, but I now forget exactly how long it took to arrive.

Makes sure you keep track of jobs that you have applied to---as just as in Canada, they can request that info...and if your not actively looking for a job, they can terminate the EI.

Thanks Flames, I figured it was the same process as it ever was. I remember filling out the little cards back in the 1970's the one time I did claim. LOL

Just be nice to have the financial bridge to finding a job I want, and not just any job once I get settled.

I was hoping I could have a few weeks at home to prepare for moving before I go and want a few weeks to get settled in the US before we start the AOS process. But also don't want to lose out on EI because I took my time leaving Canada.

You supposed to apply for it within 4 weeks of leaving, but you won't get any EI until after you get your EAD. So you have plenty of time to update EI international about all the things they need to know.

OK, so really they won't get fussy about me not moving in 4 weeks.. as long as I apply within then... I'll probably be pretty close to it, but might be tough to quit, move and get married in under 4 weeks!

Ok, I need help and I'm really hoping someone might know the answer to the following -

I signed up for EI, went through waiting for the EAD, made pointless phone reports to keep my claim alive, recently got my EAD and got approved for EI. I have been approved at $291 CDN per week. My EAD card has a start date of September 13 2014. As I understand it, you start receiving payments back dated to that date. I also understand there is a 2 week waiting period. That would bring us to September 27th. Does this mean I should have received payment for two weeks worth by October 9th? I only received one weeks worth at $291. Furthermore, I haven't received anything else. I've reported, tried to comprehend this bizarre and torturous system and was told that I would receive my payments bi-weekly from now on in a double weekly payment of $582 and was told I would have received it this past Thursday or Friday October 23rd or 24th, but I STILL haven't received anything.

I have bills to pay, this is ridiculous!

Any incite?

Has anyone had any trouble receiving EI with the K1 entry visa? I've already applied and provided my ROE etc but I was informed that as a result of not living with my fiancé for at least a year prior to moving (therefore we are not common law) that I do not have just cause for leaving my employment to move to the U.S. and to be with him. I have already begun my request for reconsideration but was just wondering if anyone else experienced this and what they had to do?

You won't get it until you have your EAD. You may need to provide proof that you've moved and are married as well.

What are the steps to apply for EI?

Do we need some sort of a letter from previous employer of the reason for resignation?

If somebody can shed some lights please..

Also, I have read that the moment we arrive in the US, we still need to wait for 3 months to be able to work? But we are able to obtain SSN the time we arrive right? Why are suppose to wait 3 months?

1) You go onto the service Canada website and it explains

2) they need to send your ROE (record of employment) to Service Canada which every employer is required to do within XX period of time. then you have 4 weeks from your last work day to apply for EI

3) because you are K1 it's 60-90 days to get your EAD from the AOS date which can be filed as soon as you have your marriage certificate. Please read up on the AOS. SSN should be gotten as soon as you arrive as it's a) harder to get after marriage and b) can't be gotten between 2 weeks before the I-94 expires and your EAD arriving. I-94 expires 90 days after arrival.
