Is white-out bad?

Hello,

I have had to correct some info on my DS-230 form, and since Montreal requested that I complete the form they provided, this means that I have had to use white-out in some cases.

I know I'm probably being paranoid, but will this raise any red flags on their end?

I would have preferred to complete the form online, but when I called them, they asked I complete it hand-written (doesn't make sense!).

How picky do they get about these forms???

When I was at the consulate for my interview the lady at the window was filling in their part of the form and made a mistake, so she pulled out her white out and made her correction. So if it eases your mind some, "the powers to be" at the consulate use it. lol

This part doesn't surprise me in the least -- Montreal has had a long history of being picky about forms being handwritten and using only the forms they provide.

As far as the white-out is concerned, since I have been on VJ, white-out has been described as a big no-no, and for people to just cross out the mistake with one line and write above it. But seeing as you've already done it, I'm not sure there's much they can say to you about it -- you could always ask for a new form from them (seeing as they're picky about using ONLY their's! ) if they get snarky about it and re-do it on the spot. You'll be ok.

They ask people to hand write it. That is just plain kooky to me. Why on earth do they care if you write it or type it, what do they achieve by asking people to hand write it, it's both funny and weird!!

hey now, I didn't say no, I just told you others have said no! My personal opinion is not to worry about it and take it to the interview and deal with it then IF it becomes an issue.

Thanks Cassie. It wasn't you I was refering to, I just did a bunch of searching through the forums, and about half of the respondents to the "white out" question said that it was best not to do it. I just don't want to do anything that will jeopardize our application, and since these forms are being mailed in, I don't want to put myself in the position where they ask for an RFE.

soooo... to be on the safe side, I'll call them later today, and get an answer directly from the source.

Like you, I'm sure it's fine, but I can't help but stress about such minor details haha

Tee hee.. I totally can't remember her hair color.. I do remember her being older and crotchity... so me thinks it was probably a different lady..

If it is any help, I used white-out to correct a poorly written word to make it more legible on my application form as well - no one made any comments about it and it apparently didn't cause any problems since I got the K-1. I suspect they will say that they would rather you didn't make a mistake to begin with but that white-out was fine as long as it was legible.

Something I did for any forms after that - I made a practice photocopy and then entered the initial information on that so that I got it right - then transferred it to the 'good copy' for submission.

Great tip.. i do this at work so I did do it for my paperwork for K-1 as well. It's an excellent tip!

ok, I called Montreal, and the man said it was fine, a DS-230 form with white-out on it is acceptable.
