Landlord trying to EXTORT money from fiance

The landlord where my girl lives is trying to get extra money from her. She is asking for money because she claims the other tenants were short and she wants my wife to be to pay the difference by loaning 6000 pesos. Then she claims the electricity is short and wants another 3000 pesos. I told her to say no. But shes crying and upset and wants to move out.

I told her that we need to keep the same address for the duration of the process.

What should I do or tell her?

They must think the rich American wont mind paying the extra cash.

I don't think it would be a big deal to move out and change addresses. You just file a change of address. I just bought a house for us and will do that this month. Surely there are laws to protect her wherever she is. She could research this and not let herself be intimidated. Besides, the other tennants probably are paying the rent or they are thinking that it's easier to let the American girl pay. Unfortunately, some people think it's okay to get money from the "rich American" and feel entitled to it. A lot of us are barely making it financially and work hard for what we do get.

I would tell her to move out if she wants and file for a change of address. Or she could tell her landlord that she "can't afford to live here anymore" and will need to move if it costs more than what they agreed on. Also, depending on where her mail comes to this landlord could be a problem. She may be snooping and you could miss an important letter from USCIS if she decides to "lose" or throw away mail. It's really too bad that some people think it's okay to take advantage of other people. This is an especially hard time for we women who are waiting for our loves to join us. It's quite painful at times and very stressful.

Good luck

You should find a new place.

I-130 Timeline with USCIS:

It took 92 days for I-130 to get approved from the filing date

NVC Process of I-130:

It took 78 days to complete the NVC process

Interview Process at The U.S. Embassy

Interview took 223 days from the I-130 filing date. Immigrant Visa was issued right after the interview

It wouldn't be the first time! Tell her to stand fast and not pay the extortion money. Good luck

Since according to your timeline your petition's been approved by the NVC and is on its way to the consulate, if she does decide to move, make sure that you let the consulate know of the address change and not just CIS.

During the AOS process is when it is most problematic to change addresses. The visa applicant/beneficiary moving at this stage is not such a big problem. You can simply notify the Consulate directly, so they send the packet 3 and 4 to the correct address. You can also verify that they have changed the address on their records. USCIS is not so accomodating or reliable.

They tried to do that to Luz all the time. It turned out the caretaker was skimming and got caught. Tell her to take a hike or she will call the owner. That will shut her up.

I'm guessing she's in Mexico. If so, she doesn't even need the fiance invitation letter as you will receive one yourself in the States. That's the only thing they'd send to her in Mexico. Most people don't receive it any way.

If she has a contract, tell her to report the landlord to PROFECO. That should clear things up ASAP.

Yes this is common in the Philippines. I would under no circumstance send the money. If you pay it once they will expect it every time. If the others are short then she should go to them not your fiance. I have spent many months in the PI and have heard a million stories as to why girls need money. My fiance is in Cebu and people come out of the woodwork when I am there or right after I leave asking for loans from her. The simple truth is that a loan in the PI means that they want you to give them money...they will not pay it back.

As to changing addresses it should be no problem. Call the Embassy with her new address and you can arrange for her to pick up packet 4 at St. Lukes Medical Center or at the Embassy in Manila. Once she interviews she puts the delivery address on the form for Delbros to deliver the visa or she can request she pick it up at the Embassy as well. But dont let it keep your fiance from a peaceful living situation. If they are after her for money you can bet the possibility of them taking her mail is real. I would let her move...just be careful as many girls will try lots of stories to get a few extra pesos. Best of luck to you both. God Bless!
