Obtaining Police Certificates in Canada

Hello,

When the consulate says that we need to provide police certificates obtained from all localities that we have resided in for 6 months or more since the age of 16, does this mean I need to provide a certificate from every town I've lived in? I've always lived in Ontario, but I have moved from one town to another. I'm not sure how literal to take this.

Any help anyone can provide is greatly appreciated.

01/13/08 - USPS confirmed delivery of AOS package

01/14/08 - received new SSN with married name

01/19/08 - received all 3 NOA's

02/04/08 - case transferred to CSC (notified online)

02/11/08 - biometrics

02/14/08 - case received at CSC

03/08/08 - approval notice for travel document sent (notified online)

03/12/08 - EAD card approved

03/14/08 - received AP

03/15/08 - received EAD

03/16/08 - AP and EAD touched?? I have already received them.

03/26/08 - AOS touched!!

03/27/08 - AOS touched again...

05/12/08 - Card Production Ordered!!

05/13/08 - Welcome letter has been sent

In Canada, you can get a "Canada Wide" check that works great for that requirement.

The RCMP police certificate is good for all places that you've lived in Canada.

Nini - Vancouver BC, Canada (she's the one who does the forum thing)

Bee - Devon PA, USA (he's the one who gave her the shiny ring)

Getting our sanity tested by bureaucracy since 2007.

One thing not yet mentioned is that if you DO NOT have a criminal record DON't do a finger print background check with the RCMP as that will take time. As Jeremy + Kristy said get a Canada wide check done either with your local police, or the RCMP as Nini & Bee, remember that fingerprints are for those with criminal convictions.

Looking in another forum... It seems that getting police certificates from the local police forces is more fraught with issues... To say nothing that people have to pay and wait for them.

If you can go to an RCMP office, at least for here in Calgary, they can do it in 5 minutes and it's free, as long as you say it's for Immigration/Visa purposes.

I am confused because the URL they give us here in Canada comes up with an RCMP page that says the page does not exist. I called the RCMP and they said I have to go where I live which is New Westminster and is city police not RCMP.

What exactly is the Police Certificate anyway? I thought it was fingerprinting and when I looked that up through the RCMP site it said we get fingerprinted on a form and then send the form to Ottawa and it takes 4 months to process. I am assuming now that that was not the right thing to look up and the wrong information (please God).

Hi Kim,

If the person has a criminal record in Canada then they need the fingerprint version. If there is no criminal record they just need the Canada wide name check.

You can obtain the Canada wide name check or fingerprint version from your Police Station or the RCMP - whichever is easier for you.

Whatever you do, avoid getting the fingerprint check. If someone tells you that is the way to go, find someone else to do the check for you. (unless you have a criminal history).

We have been waiting for over 7 months for our RCMP check, we had to do it that way as my fiance no longer resides in Canada. The four months is from when they enter it into the computer...which took almost 4 months alone.
