Getting case number when paying with Money Order

It is my understanding that when paying the I-130 fee, you can get your case number from the stamp found on your canceled check.

However, I prefer to use a money order to make the payments. Is there any other way to get the case number, or do you just have to wait for your NOA if you use a money order?

BTW. Thanks for all the help and information everyone has given me. If it were not for VJ, I would most certainly want a lawyer to file this stuff.

Unless you can get a copy of the cancelled money order, you won't be able to see the case # written or stamped on it. Even though they wrote our # on my check, I still couldn't make it out and had to call them so they could give it to me over the phone, which was a good thing because I didn't get the NOA1 until 2½ months later.

If I remember, I received two letters from USCIS and the cosulate. each one had a different #. I believe the first letter had the case # on it.

Yes, you can call the USCIS customer service # at 800.375.5283 and they can give it to you over the phone.

I tried to get my number from USCIS using the "1-800" Customer Service line. But, you cannot get any Customer Service unless you know your receipt number!!!

That's not true. You need to actually speak with an operator, they'll ask your name/wife's name, both DOBs and addresses. Once they make sure they are talking to the petitioner, they'll give you the receipt # over the phone, if they've actually assigned you one.
