Traveling on I-551 stamp

Where and how did you all get your I-551 stamp? Did you just go to your local office? I've booked an appointment at Chicago via infopass. I'm assuming if I just bring all my paperwork, valid passport, expired green card etc, they should give me the stamp there and then? Or is there some form I'm supposed to file that takes forever to process and lots of $$$? Thanks for reading this.

I went yesterday to get the Stamp on my passport. I got an appointment thru infopass, went to the NYC office(26 federal plaza). As I got into the building I explaing my situation (same as yours) to the officer in room 310 (as directed by the infopass appointment) and he told me "so you're coming for the stamp". I just told him I received my NOA and biometrics appointment, and that I would be traveling in a month and that I wanted to get back in the country with no problems. So you see...it's obvious even for them that you'll get the stamp. They made me fill a "form". A very easy one, just explaining the reason for the visit, to the USCIS building, your Alien # name address and phone number. I had to wait for about 1 hour, then an immigration officer came, gave me my passport and explained me that the stamp is good for travel and work. That the GC once expired is dead, that all I have to show is the stamp and the NOA. and that's it. I'll also bring with me my GC, but I won't show it unless the IOfficer wants to see it because sometimes it's considered illegal to use an expired document and they might retain it. Any suggestions??

The stamp has the expiration date, in my case June 18th 2008. Good luck! ;)

No need to fill forms. Just go to the local office and request the stamp. The lady that stamped my passport told me that we are entitled to have the stamp. Good luck. Make sure the dates on the stamp are correct.

In my case, they didn't take my GC but I think is a good idea if you don't show it to them, just in case...

Thanks for the info - hopefully all will go well. I'll let you know!

One other question - can you choose which USCIS office you go to or are you restricted to the one in your zipcode of residence?

I live in NJ - but work in NYC and I'd rather go to that one rather than have to take vacation / personal time to go down there.

Went down today - the Chicago lady was helpful. She would only give me a 60 day stamp - something about only being a local office...? That's OK, as I'll be back from the UK before it expires. A little annoying that I will have to make a return visit every 60 days. Does anybody know how to get the year-long stamp?

Since your husband is in the military, you fit under a special category, you should not have any problem, and the six months requirement for the green card won't apply to you, you can do a search here there are a few military couple here who could guide you more and read from past experience.

I received the NOA 751 to remove condition, and on that form they even mentioned something about Military families.

Hi! Im traveling late November for Italy because my husband's in the Navy so I should come with him because I'm his dependent. He has his orders already and we should stay there for 3 years. We just got married last May and still in the process of filing AOS. Hopefully I could get my GC after 3 mos without any delays and RFE's.

My questions are,

1.) can I come with him and stay in Italy with my temp green card only?

2.) should I do some paper works also? What else should I do and how do I do it?

3.) Would I be still entitled for Removal of Conditions after 2 years of my GC's expiration date with me living outside US on that period?

I would be entering Italy with a "No-Fee Passport" which will be provided by the Military, so no problem with that, my concern would most likely focus on how can I go back to US after my husband's duty and get a renewed Green Card afterwards.

I hope you guys can help me with whatever knowldge you have, even in the littlest way I would very much appreciate it. Thanks! :help:

  • 10 years later...

I just thought I would share this for anyone who is traveling on a I551 stamp internationally.

I never had a problem traveling with the extension letter and I did so quite a few times in and out of the UK.

My one and only issue was traveling with the I551 stamp in the passport - flying out of London Heathrow recently.

The check in agent at BA First Class checkin didn’t know what it was.  She point blank said - I’m sorry sir you have no valid document for entry into the USA.

I said - hold on, i have a green card.  She said - show it to me. So I open the passport at the stamp and she was like - that ain’t no green card.  No fly.

I said - hold on, can you call someone - this is a valid US government stamp.  An I551 stamp in a passport is a valid green card.

She made some calls, and made me sit and wait - 10 mins later, came over, said - ok your documents are good.  You are good to go.

I was a little bit peeved as it was kinda stressful - someone should train people a bit better about this stuff.

A few weeks later I was back in the UK and flew out of Manchester UK to the USA - check in agent looked at the stamp - oh there is your green card. No issue.  It totally depends on the agent you get.

So my advice is, stand your ground if you get issues in an airport.  Insist the airline person (there will be one if they fly to the USA) who understands all visas and stamps comes and reviews it.  I wish it wasn’t just a stamp - maybe a proper visa sticker that looks more official. The handwriting from the officer at the infopass appointment probably doesn’t help - but it is still a valid document.
