Things to do before leaving Canada...

Hi everyone, not sure if there is a similar topic posted somewhere, but maybe you could help me make a list of things to do before leaving Canada.

Here is what I have so far:

1. Bank - deal with accounts and credit cards, decide what to keep open or close

2. Medical files - get copies or arrange to have them sent to new doc in the US

3. Pack :)

4. Exchange some money

Ok.... not much on my list right now.... any other "official" type things I'm forgetting?

Thanks,

Laura

I opened up my wallet, took out all my misc cards ier movie rental places, other memberships and cancelled them. If you have RRSP's make note of market and book value the day you enter the USA, you wil need to know them if u cash themin later ( I think u only need to know the book value, but not 100%) As well notify ur RRSP holder, ur to be treated as a Non-resident of Canada, they should send u a form to fill out!! Get ur driver record. start hoarding tim hortons coffee!! Best of luck

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Definately arrange a change of address with Canada Post. I think it costs around $75 for 6 months and they will forward your mail to your new US address. This way you can make sure you did all of your change of addresses right.

I did this and it worked great for me ...

I also cancelled things like video rental places, fitness world, power, cable, house phone, cell phone, ect. (basically I kept all of my bills in a folder for the last few months so I had somewhere to reference them all and so that didn't forget to cancel any of them).

I paid off all of my credit cards and debts and converted the rest of my money to US funds and wired it down to my wife (fiancee at the time).

Also, put all your important paperwork in one place when you move. I threw all my important stuff in a suitcase so I knew where everything was exactly if I needed it (I suck at unpacking).

Definitely cancel all utilities ASAP. I found out the hard way that some of them will not cancel your service for 30 days and you'll have to pay it (e.g. Bell Sympatico). I also got dinged by Enbridge for water heater rental. They bill every few months so I ended up having to pay for a month that I wasn't even there.

Remember you can also request a refund (which we will) of your contributions to the Canada Pension Plan and in my case to the Alberta public Service something pension plan.- They close you acc't, and give you the money - which is taxed but still in your pocket  . Now, only do this if you have no plans on returning I guess. Refunds are always good for the soul.

Advise your employers of your new address so they can mail your T4's next year!

Also, try and get a hold of your school transcripts (high school and beyond), in case you need to have your credentials certified.

That's all I can think of right now (cut me some slack... it's Saturday morning and spent all week in nerd conference  )

Excellent idea for a thread Laura!!!!

Good one! I haven't done that but I'll make sure to contact them soon to give them my sister's address in Canada (she receives all Canadian mail for me).
