So... I decided to go ahead and get two police certificates just to be on the safe side for the interview. Looks like playing it safe has saved me now, because I just got an email back from the RCMP, and they have all my information upside down and backwards.

I sent in my request along with all the proper info + the $18 US fee for the search about 2 1/2 months ago. Haven't heard a thing since...until today. I had emailed them about a month and a half ago asking about the status of my police certificate, and they responded with this:

"Mr". (last name here, spelled WAY wrong, and identified me as a male.... last I checked, I am still 100% w-o-m-a-n.)

"Could you please reply to this e-mail with your date of birth and full name in

order to conduct our search in our data base."

Down below was the original email I had sent them, stating quite clearly my full name and date of birth lol.

Hello, I am just writing to inquire as to whether you have received my

request for a criminal record check. The criminal record check was for a

visa to enter the United States and apply for permanent residency upon

arrival there. My full name and date of birth is (my full name and date of birth here), and I included the processing fee and fingerprints with the

request.

If it has been received, are you able to provide an approximate date on when

I may receive the results?

Any info you are able to provide would be great.

Sincerely,

(my full name here)

Not really angry to be honest, since I have the back-up police certificate from the local police department. More or less I am just amused at how something thought to be so simple can end up in such a mess lol. Especially since I had stated my full name and date of birth with the original request, along with the email as shown above, and they still found someway to stretch it into a 3 month (and still going) ordeal and screw up all the facts.

Moral of the story--- Do not go through the RCMP to get your Police Certificate.

I went to my local RCMP office and they were able to get me my Police Clearance in 5 business days. It tool all of 5 minutes to complete the process including photographs.

This wasn't done locally. I had to send away for it to Ottawa. My local one was about as simple as yours though, $15 a quick form to fill out, and my police certificate in my hand 4 days later.

I had my RCMP Police certificate 10 minutes after I walked into the Calgary RCMP Office... and I didn't have to pay anything.

I had mine in only a few minutes at my Local RCMP. I went about 2 weeks ago. It was $30 for me because I am a resident in this community, non residents would be $50.

Back in September, I did the fingerprints and sent them to Ottawa- back then I thought everyone had to do that. It took 6 weeks to get it back.

I got the new one because I wasn't sure if I would need it down the road and didn't want the other one to expire.

I went to the local detachment told them I needed a Police certificate for a US Visa The whole process took about 15 minutes and cost nothing

Local RCMP that is. I think it wouldn't matter whether one goes RCMP or local Police as the National Police Records files are administered by the RCMP

Obtaining the RCMP check varies from detachment, even the price!! Not sure why Misty's took so long to obtain. Andnow many local police forces have the resources to do it as well.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1
