Do we receive an electronic NOA1 before we receive the hard copy?

Nope.

Some are able to get their case number from the back of the cancelled check. I don't get checks returned to me, however, so I had to wait for the hard copy to arrive via snail-mail. Once you have the WAC number from the NOA1, you can set up your online portfolio at www.uscis.gov.

Of course, then you should promptly forget you set it up for about 80 days, and wait to start obsessively checking it until sometime after that.

Once you receive the NOA1, there will be a date on it that will, naturally, come before when it arrives in your mailbox.

I included extra date's worth of info in my signature for those data-wonks out there. I sent the package with delivery confirmation, so I was able to see when the postal service dropped it off. Then I watched my bank account for when they cashed the check. Then, once I got the hard copy, I could see the date on that hard copy, and when I created the online portfolio, it listed yet another date as the date it "received" the petition.

Just numbers for people to do with as they please to track their own progress. Excessive, I'm sure, but during my NOA2 wait, I passed a lot of time trying to triangulate approximate waiting times, etc . . . . May as well have played tic-tac-toe repeatedly against a computer, but whatever . . . .

In your timeline you mention getting an NOA1 notification before the hard copy----how's that?

TimsDaisy is showing the date listed on the NOA1 and the date it was received.

Also, most of us that are getting our WAC# early are getting it off the check image from online banking, available usually a day or 2 after the check clears.
