Question about getting documents notarized

I recently spoke with a lawyer about submitting the petition for a K-1. She told me to go all-out as far as getting things notarized--everything from copies of receipts to letters of intent. This seems excessive to me, so I would like some feedback from other US citizen petitioners regarding what forms they got notarized, if any. Thanks in advance.

The only things that need to be notarized are the I-134 (Affidavit of Support) and the certification of any foreign document translations (if applicable). And these things are not necessary until your petiton is approved by USCIS, and gets forwarded to the Consulate. So in short, based on what you say, the lawyer doesn't know what he/she's talking about.

Only thing that needs to be notarized is form I-134 for the visa interview at the consulate, that is all. That is what we did , and had no problems with Guangzhou, the hardest, nastiest consulate of the State Department.

We had all the financial documentation notarized....the 134 and all my tax returns and I had my letter of intent to marry notarized. That's it.

Thanks for the feedback. My fiancee was recently denied an E-2 work visa, and she was also denied entrance into the US because of a small error on the I-94 she filled out on in Canada. So I know that red flags are going to go up when this petition gets to the USCIS and I want to make sure that I do everything correctly.

As mentioned the only thing that should be is the Affadavit of support.

As for all the other forms, do make copies of all forms and documents. They will be needed later.

Good luck.

wow, we have already recieved our Biometrics appointments. It is only 2 1/2 weeks away.

It seems to be moving rather quickly.

This is great.

The denial at POE tend to not be a problem with regards to K-Visa petitions. What was the reason for work visa denial, if it was on some grounds of inadmissibility that will be something that needs to be overcome.

The work visa denial was kind of odd. The interviewer decided that she didn't have enough training for the job, even though she had been working for several months. I can't remember the name of the company, but they make semiconductors.

The attorney you mentioned that told you to get everything notarized might not have experience specifically with the I-129F fiance visa. I, like the above posters, only had the I-134 Affidavit of Support notarized and everything went smoothly.

I agree, but depending on how official translations of government documents is handled in Japan, you translations may be "notarized" by the official translator. That's a bit of a different animal though. Also, if you decide to provide a copy of your passport for your fiance to carry to the interview (If you're there anyway, she can carry the actual passport.) then I would have each page of the copy notarized. Copy all pages, even the blank ones.

That denial also wont be a problem either, the denials, in your case wont cause any red-flags, so don't worry about them.

hi. this was my exact question. i have read here on VJ that the I-134 needs to be notarized, but it does not say so on the form specifically or the instructions. i just called USCIS and they said not to fill out below my signature line and it can be completed by the consulate at my fiance's interview. i am not allowed to be at the interview so should i just sign like they said? or should i sign and have it notarized like VJ recommends? i don't want to screw this part up because everyone notes it is the one of the most important parts of his interview! please advise!!
