HELP: Packet 1 from London

We recieved the first packet (packet 3) from London yesterday and it outlines 4 steps, the first is to complete and return the enclosed forms - although there were no forms enclosed a URL http://london.usembassy.gov/cons_new/visa/.../visaforms.html identifying the:

• DS-230 Part-I
  
• DS-156, in duplicate
  
• DS-156K
  
• DS-157
  

To be completed and returned as soon as possible. I have completed the forms without problem.

But! On the DS-156K it asks for attachments of Birth Certificate, Police Certificate, etc but the instructions (step two - collect the required personal documents) from the embassy state not to send any personal documents as they will be required on the day of the interview.

This has confused me and I'm not sure what to attach, or what to send.

Hold onto the documents, just send the forms for now. When you go for your interview, take the originals and a copy. The consulate will inspect the originals and keep the copies.

Be sure to keep a copy of your completed forms for your own records.

It may help to remember that the forms you are filling out are used by many people for many different kinds of visas. Some are used for regular tourist visas. So the directions are mostly correct, but, you should go by what's in the specific instructions in your packet 3. It is confusing at times, you're right!

Send back just those forms and the checklist that indicates that you have all the documents you'd need to show along with the forms. Then the Embassy knows that you're ready. The prevailing advice here on VJ is, I believe, to send back both the forms AND the checklist in one package, rather than in separate shipments. You're allowed to send them back at different times, but things seem speediest if you get it all in together - they can't/won't do anything without the checklist anyway.
