The I-130 route results in a CR1 visa if you've been married less than two years at visa issue. Otherwise it results in an IR1 visa. I don't understand why you are asking the question. Is it for somebody else. You already have both petitions approved and the Packet 3 for the K3 in hand.

The best of both worlds is for your I-130 to arrive on station after the K3 interview is already scheduled. Then the CR1 interview takes the K3 interview appointment. Since your I-130 is at NVC being processed, I'd push it along and hope for the best. Yes, you can simply keep your options open decide later not to attend the K3 interview if you wish. Most don't have that option now. I-130's are kept at the service center when an I-129 is approved, unless one takes extra steps explained here dozens of times recently.

The previous K3 has expired and we have to re-file.

Only if you want a K3 visa.

I am assuming that the timelines for IR-1 and K-3 are still quite similar so I guess Ill save some money and just go the I-130 route.

Yes, you are right. K-3 would probably save you a month or so compare to IR-1. However it will cost more money and have much more hassles. So it is up to you to weigh the costs and benefits.
