Won GC lottery but didn't use. Could this affect chances of getting K1 visa?

Hi all,

About ten years ago after finishing high school, I applied for the green card lottery and wound up being one of the lucky people to be selected. Shortly after wining, my mother became seriously ill and I was unable to take it up as I had to stay in Australia and care for her.

I'm now in a relationship with an American. We plan to become engaged at Christmas and apply for the K1 visa.

Does anyone know if my being awarded - but not being able to take up the original visa will harm my chances at being awarded the K1? I'm worried that it will go against me when applying for this new visa.

Thanks.

The fact that you were one of the winners, but did not follow through, means nothing. It's as though it did not happen as you never filed for the GC or went to the interview.

Good luck on your visa journey!
