If the Canadian is by himself then, No. They probably won't/or shouldnt' rent a car to you if your intent is for the Canadian to drive it into Canada. This is from the Alamo site:

Rentals originating in the United States (USA) can be driven throughout the USA and Canada. Vehicles cannot be driven into Mexico. *Please note: Canadian citizens cannot rent a car in the US and drive it into Canada.

The vehicle would have to have the Canadian duty and tax paid on it. Unless there are car companies in the US that have Canadian duty paid vehicles.

Sorry should clarify "Canadian resident" Citizenship doesn't matter - it is based on your residency (were you call your primary home) for Canada Customs purpose. I you are still a legal resident of Canada then - no , you can not drive a US non Canadian duty paid vehicle into Canada.

Congrats! It's old hat by this point, but check with your car rental company about the car. They have restrictions on locations, but if you say where you plan to go, they should be okay with that. Make suer you have the rental agreement for crossing the border too. I can only speak as a USC, I don't know about Canadians and rental cars, but other people have posted that.

Just to clarify and see if this makes a difference. I will rent the car here in Alabama and Dan will drive to Canada by himself with the dog. Keep the car for the 3 weeks it takes for his appointment and then go to his interview. He will then drive the car back here to Alabama and we would return it then. Does this make a difference????

Just based on my own experiences here:

For bringing my dog to the US, I had to have a vet certificate showing that he had been vaccinated for Rabies, and that the shot was still good for at least another 6 months. (Rabies vaccine I believe lasts for three years or so.)

Renting the car shouldn't be a problem, just make sure he is the one who rents it, as the person who rents the car has to be the one who drives it, even if you are married.

As for the criminal record check, I can only tell you, do NOT get your fingerprints done locally, then have them sent to the Civil Fingerprinting Services in Ottawa like the RCMP website says. I sent mine over 3 weeks ago and haven't heard anything back yet.

(Everyone else seems to have gotten a hold of theirs alot quicker by just walking into the police station, so now I'm kicking myself in the butt for not discovering VJ earlier )

No need for fingerprints as OP has stated that he has not had a criminal record

Double check with Neiks abnd zyggy about the car, since he is coming into canada (as a cdn citizen) with a usa plated/registerd car, migh tnot be likely

Sorry if I wasn't clear in my last post. Your husband is not a legal US resident yet so he is a legal resident of Canada. Being a legal resident of Canada he can not drive a US rental car into/in Canada. Residents of Canada can not drive a non-duty paid vehicle in Canada. Non-duty paid means that the vehicle has not been imported into Canada and tax and duty paid on it. Thus the US rental car is a Non-duty paid vehicle.

It doesn't matter if the rental company does allow it. It doesn't matter if its the US person that is renting it. What matters is who is driving it when it reaches the border. It will be Canada Customs that will be making the decision that he not allowed to drive the vehicle in Canada.

So, once again.... short answer.... NO he can not drive the US rental vehice into Canada.

Now with all that said, I'm sure someone has the experience that they (a Canadian resident) rented a car in the US and drove it into Canada. I'm sure at some time there has been a nice Canadian Customs on duty and has allowed it.

What I am telling you are the actual Canada Customs regulations.

No, He's the Canadian resident driving by himself. Only feasible way for him to drive the US rental car into Canada is if a US resident is accompany him to Canada in the vehicle. Sorry, the dog won't qualify as a US resident.

My friends and parents always travel across the border with their dogs, never once been asked about vaccinations, but the dog has to have a record. Like you've been told, they'll only ask to see them if you don't have them.

A couple of us from here went to the same RCMP office, took 5 minutes and $20 and we walked out with our CPIC. Tell him to stop in Kingston.

Ask rental Car companies if they have a Canadian car to go Back to Canada , that would fix it , Right..
