Just curious

I was curious if people were able to find jobs in the same career they had in Canada, or if they changed careers when moving to the US.

I am also feeling a bit nosy today and wondering what career the USC is in :)

I'll go first:

My hubby, the Canadian: carpenter. He hasn't received his work authorization yet, but we don't anticipate him having any difficulties finding a carpentry job. Lots of them in the area where we live. The only thing that might be different is that he was doing supervisory duties at his job in Canada, whereas here, we imagine he may have to start at the bottom and work his way up.

Me, the USC: psychotherapist

Lots of "under the table" carpentry work on Craigslist.org , Not that I support that sort of thing, lol

I'm starting fresh. Nearly 15 Yrs in the Canadian Armed Forces, now starting a RN program this August! Not even close on what I was doing in the Forces!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

My position in Canada was Office Manager & I have a job offer (whenever I get EAD) for the same position (it will be a little less accounting little more admin - but for all purposes the same). I will end up making more $$ in the US too.. YAHOO!! (which the cost of living here in CT will promptly take care of).

Hubby works in the Avionic Industry in a big company here in CT. He's keeping his job of course:) Tee hee..

Well once I get over there (probably this time next year after reading everyone's timeline) I'll be keeping my job here in Canada with the federal government since I can't work for the US government until I become a citizen. Though I will be actively seeking employment over in the US to get some use out of my computer programming diploma which is layered in dust LOL

US hubby to be is in the prototype engineering field.

Well for me I was a Canadian Customs Broker (that was laid off) at the border. I suppose once everything gets done and over with I could probably apply to be a USA Customs Broker...things are similar, but different. I loved the job which was the main thing.

Right now I go to school via the internet for Medical Transcription which can be done from your home anywhere. I'm hoping to find a decent job doing that.

My man is a farmer...so the MT field is perfect for me to stay at home and help out on the farm.

Oct 1/09 - I-751 package sent

Oct 3 - package delivered

Oct 5 - NOA mailed

Oct 13 - 1st NOA received and additional letters for my daughters I filed with. NOAs stated Resident Status

has been extended for 1 year and that we will be receiving a letter for an ASC appointment for

fingerprints, photo, and signature.

Dec 2009 - Received 10 year permanent resident card.

Feb 2010 - My children received their 10 year permanent resident cards.

Oct 2010 - My children were legally adopted by my USA Citizen husband.

I am a Hairstylist- always easy to find work in that field.

I think when I get back to US, I will take a Floral Design Course. Right now I am working in a Flower Shop and a Greenhouse. I love the Floral stuff.

Mel (USC) does a few things- He is a Notary Public, He teaches a Business class a few nights a week and he works at a company analyzing data and stuff.

When my fiancee (USC) and I (Canadian) started going out a long while ago (2004), we talked this over and it was decided that my skills are more transportable than hers, since I work in the IT Industry doing computer support.

The company that I've worked for almost 9 years has offices worldwide... so therefore I've been networking with managers in the US. This company doesn't do cross-border transfers, but we have since found out that if I was to quit here in Canada, and get hired on immediately to this company's US offices, I can keep my time with the company, which means that I would be able to enrol in benefits immediately, vacation time entitlement, among other things. The prospects in the US offices have been more positive than I had expected, particularly since I will live in rather relatively sparsely populated SW Kansas, as there's a manager in the US that's kinda keen to hire me, but he has to clear it with US offices upper-management... To say nothing of trying to puzzle through this whole waiting 3+ months for the EAD and/or Green Card thing and if they can accomodate this somehow.

I guess, if it was meant to be, then it was meant to be...

So, in short, am I able to do the same career in the US? Seems like I should be able to do it. Though, I could upgrade my skills should I find that I have some free time waiting for the EAD.

Scott.

June 3 - Mailed N-400, Application for Naturalization.

June 8 - Received email with Receipt Number.

June 11 - Biometrics appointment letter mailed out (June 30 at 1PM)

June 30 - Biometrics.

Yeah, I should be okay. I have a fairly extensive background in graphic design as well as IT Project Management. I still have some Canadian design clients so... provided they still pan out, I should hopefully still be able to work from home.

I think everyone knows what I do. I'll be returning to my job in Canada once my mat leave is done. Have no desire to work for US CBP.

My man is a farmer
Ditto - North Dakota farmer.
Well for me I was a Canadian Customs Broker (that was laid off) at the border
Which port? Which broker? I occasionally had to call and talk to some of the brokers at North Portal. Is this how you met your husband?

I'm a hairstylist as well. :) I love what I do, but I'm going to have to build a brand new client base... in place I don't know many people. That's alriiiight... I would like to eventually open up my own salon.

My soon to Hubby is in Law Enforcement.

It's interesting to know what everyone does on here. :)

I worked for the Provincial Government in Sask. as a Probation Officer for 25 years. I retired, but at 49, I'm still young! (yes, I said young! hehe) I'm very fortunate that my husband has a very good job as a Geospatial Analyst and he's been at his employ for 24 years so I don't have to work.

I'm unsure right now what I want to do. I want to do something completely different, so I don't even know what I'd need here to do work in my career field. I suspect I'd have to be a citizen? I really don't know. Perhaps that would only be with the Federal Government. I would like to still work in the Social Work field however, and have thought about a teacher's assistant, hospice worker, or maybe hanging up my own shingle!

I've just done some training and will be volunteering with the YRead program here in St. Louis. I've been matched up with a nine year old boy, for reading tutoring twice a week. Wish me luck!

I was a factory worker at Chryslers in Canada and moved here to become a Geographical Information Systems Tech/Analyst and now working for a pseudo Government agency. Of course I was in the factory after I graduated from college (university in Canada) with a geography degree. So glad the US had a lot of oppurtunities that at the time Canada did not have...

I'm just a wanderer in the desert winds...
