DS-160 question

Hello guys,

 

My fiancée's patronymic name has a hypen(-) in it. On the DS-160, it doesn't let me add a hyphen. I am just scared because both of her passports (in Russia, there is a national passport and a travel passport), has her patronymic name with the (-) in it and the DS-160 has to be completely accurate. Her father's name is hyphenated. For example, I mean like this: Vladimir-Ivan. What am I supposed to do? The DS-160 does not let you hyphenate names. I am trying to add her patronymic name along with her first name under the field (given names, which is on the first page of the DS-160) but, it doesn't let me. Any help will be appreciated.

I’m originally from Taiwan and I have a hyphen in my first name. Example: Ling-Yun Chang

Ling-Yun is my first name and Chang is my last name. 

 

Ever since I moved to America, this hyphen has caused a lot of confusion, but never trouble. On some credit cards, they took out the hyphen and split it into first and middle names, on some other documents, they took out the hyphen and make it into one name Lingyun.

 

Don’t worry, I never had any problems with immigration. On my SSN, it reads Ling Yun Chang, and on my green card, it reads,

Given name: Ling Yun

Last name: Chang

 

When they don’t let you enter hyphen, just leave a space. I’m being naturalized in a couple weeks, and I’ve never had any problems throughout my immigration journey.

Just a bit of advice: DO NOT PUT PATRONYMIC NAMES UNDER "GIVEN NAMES"!!

 

I didn't mean to yell, heh, but just want to let you know that we did that for my husband, and then when his GC arrived, they put his patronymic name AND his first name together under "first name" on the GC so it didn't even fit properly and they chopped off a letter. Meh. This is because "Given Name(s)" are really supposed to be your first name(s) not middle names also.

 

I would just go with the first name and the last name and leave out the patronymic altogether. You will notice on the загранпаспорт (Russian international passport) that they do not even list the patronymic in English, just first and last names. So just leave it out, otherwise she might end up with an error on her final GC like we did.

Oh my. I should fill out a new DS-160 quick! Great :/ On my I-129F, I put her patronymic name as her middle name. I messed up, it seems. *SIGH*

 

I am Russian-American (by the way). My parents are both from Russia. I regret so much being born in the USA because if I was born in Russia, I would have been with my fiancée already. This visa business is the most frustrating process I have ever dealt with in my entire life. LOL.

Oh interesting, I think you did OK if it was actually a "middle name" field on the I-129F. But for "Given Name(s)", don't put it. Does that make sense? Whenever they specifically ask for "Middle Name/Initial" put it, but if they don't, just don't mention the patronymic name.

 

Hopefully another Russian VJer will chime in and clarify what their experience was with the patronymic name. It was confusing to us as well, that's why we put it and then ended up with the faulty GC, but it seems to avoid mistakes, better leave it out for the DS-160. It's annoying that they make it so unclear...

I was scared not to add her patronymic name because it says on the DS-160 to make sure everything matches her passport? Like I said, I made her patronymic name her middle name on the I-129F but, even though I did that, can I just remove her patronymic name completely for the DS-160?

Yes, that's what I would do. The "Given Name(s)" thing is more for cultures where it's normal to have more than one first name, i.e. Jean Baptiste, etc. The patronymic name is not technically part of her first name, (it's closer to being a middle name), so I would leave it out. You shouldn't have any issues.

 

Here's an example Russian passport I just googled, you'll see that the patronymic name isn't even translated on Russian passports, so you should be just fine leaving it off the DS-160. Better to not put it than go through the hassle of having to correct it later on the GC or EAD card!

I will start a new DS-160 and remove her «отчество» , it seems! My parents don’t have their’s, neither, now that you mention it! I just looked at their GC’s and it doesn’t have their Russian patronymic names on it!

Yes, good! I wish we had known, now we're in the long process of waiting for a replacement GC (it can take up to a year to get it!) because of the silly misunderstanding about the отчество.  Best of luck.

Hm, that's a good question. When we did ours, we did put the parents' patronymics and it was fine. The issue with putting it for the applicant is because that's what will go on the physical EAD / green card in my experience. I think you could also leave out the parents' as well because again they aren't technically "given names," which I didn't know at the time.

I just filled out a new DS-160. I put her first name under given name and her last name under surname. I put her patronymic name only under the part where it asks for full name in native alphabet. The I-129F has a field that asks for middle name, which I did indeed, put her patronymic as her middle name. But, for the DS-160, I took your advice and removed the patronymic name and went with first name under given name and last name under surname. I HOPE this does not count as a discrepancy and cause us problems since we did add her patronymic name on the I-129F as her middle name but dropped the patronymic name on the DS-160.

I think you should be fine...you'll see that even on the I-129F it says "Given Name (First Name)" in one field and "Middle Name" in another, which I guess adds to the clarification that middle names are not "given names" but rather two different things.

Hi everyone! My husband and I applied for the CR-1 visa. He is Kazakhstan citizen, from Russian family, and living in Russia. In his birth certificate the patronymic is included, but in his passport is not. Only appears his First and Last name. Therefore, we filled our I-130  as in his passport. Now, we need to send the Police records to the NVC and I worry about if it will be a discrepancy. What has been your experience on the Police records and this issue in general? Any problem in the embassy or NVC? Any help will be kindly appreciated. Thanks.

I don't think so. Some passports do not include the patronymic name, it seems! You should be fine! You will have copies of his passport and his birth certificate, so they can clearly see he is the same person. This is my two cents!
