traveling while waiting on I-751

I mailed my I-751 package today and my conditional GC expires on march 24th...ouf, just in time as I believe they will get it before Thursday the 24th.

My question is: can I travel abroad before receiving any answer from immigration?

My CGC will be expired when I need to travel this summer and according to some people on this forum, they've had to wait up to a year to get their 10yr GC.

Thank you so much, it looks like a lot of nice folks are exchanging in here!

I believe when you get your NOA-1, there is a note on it that allows you to make an InfoPass appointment at your local office, and you go to the office and show them the letter and they put a stamp in your passport to extend your residency by one year. (If you don't have the 10-year green card by then, you can get another stamp.)

If you were approved at your interview, remember the stamp they put in your passport that day? It's the same stamp.

In other words you'll be using your passport stamp as proof of your permanent residency again, until you get the 10-year green card.

You can travel with your expired card and a copy of the NOA you will get soon, extending your status for one year. Keep the original safe.

It can take 3-18 months before you get a decision on the I-751; you may apply for naturalization on schedule without an approval on the I-751.

Thank you! I actually dont remember getting that 'note' you're talking about with my 2 year Green Card (is that what you call the NOA 1?) But regardless even if I did, I dont have it... I guess I can make an Info Pass appointment through the ISCIS website right? As for the passport stamp from the interview, I had one in my old one but I had to have a new (swiss) passport made in November of last year because the old one expired.

Antoine,

You will get a NOA as a receipt for the application you've just mailed; it will probably come within the next 2 weeks. That letter will extend your Permanent Resident status for one more year while they look at your form I-751.

You do not need to get an I-551 stamp in your passport unless the one-year extension is almost up and you have not received a decision (approval or interview).
