Police cert. from USA?

Hi folks, please enlighten -

I am the beneficiary and I have previously (10 yrs ago) lived in USA for almost 3 years, as J-1 student. I returned to my home country after study.

Do I understand correctly that USA is not included in the list of countries from which I will need to obtain police clearance?

Correct, you don't need a police certificate from USA. They will do a background check on you as a part of the K1 visa process. I think they do it at NVC before your case gets sent to the Embassy.

Thanks, and do they just sent the results of the check to the consulate or can they make their own decisions in case something is found? (not that I remember anything but who knows!!)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe K-1 visas are not processed by NVC besides assigning a case #. They get sent to the embassy right away and the embassy receives the remaining paperwork.

But who says it's correct, right? I really don't know and don't want to confuse anyone

I don't think the NVC would forward the case to the Embassy until/unless the background check comes clear. Not sure though...

Hopefully somebody else can shed more light on this.

NVC does more than simply assign case numbers to K1s and K3s. They also do conduct some sort of background check. For better than 9/10 of cases, the NVC step lasts just a few days. For less than 5% of K3 (and I believe the fraction is similar than K1 but I didn't acquire enough data before we got past it) the NVC stage lasts more than 15 days. For us, this time, is lasted 28 days.
