When my husband (then fiance) and I went through the POE, there was this russian girl in the secondary inspection room who couldn't speak ANY english at all. She did, however, have a slip of paper with a phone # on it ... which seemed to have been her fiance's # from what we understood (yeah, so we were eavesdropping while waiting for our turn :D ) The officer himself called that number and talked to the girl's US fiance. He pretty much told him that she has arrived and that next time she has to travel by herself, she should at least have some basic info written on a piece of paper. They never asked her any questions at all (how could they?), but talked to her fiance for a few minutes. They were incredibly nice and helpful, but unfortunately, we never got to hear the end of the conversation LOL as we got called by another officer to hand in our paperwork  .

You might want to make sure he has your phone # (besides other basic info) written on a slip of paper, could be helpful.

Good luck!

Although I have no knowledge of the subject, I would imagine he would not be the first person to ever enter through the POE and not speak very good english... and probably not the last either..... I would have to say he would be just fine.... I would assume there would at least be someone who speaks French.... I think that would be the next language most used in the U.S. next to Spanish.... but once again, I have no idea!!!!!!

He speaks French, Arabic, and Kaybile.. I don't know if they'd be able to accomodate.

Will he be entering at Detroit Metro? There Detroit area has a lot of arabic speaking people as well as french speaking from Canada. I don't think he will have a problem, though I agree with Meauxna, get used to the word fiance because that can be used against you.

  • 2 weeks later...

Since it will be at least a few more months until he gets here why don't you have him take some english classes? I am sending my future step-son to school right now to improve his english. It can't hurt since he will want to learn it when he gets here anyway.

There will be someone to translate for him if he needs it. All airlines have someone that speaks the language if they offer the flight.
