"why do you want to go to the US" question at Interviews

I keep seeing that at most interviews the question "why do you want to go to the US?" is asked... I know alot of you are seperated from your significant others so Im sure the answer is to be with your fiance/to get married or be with your husband/wife to start a life together as a married couple..

reason I ask is (making a short story long)

because my husband and I have been married 5 years, and Ive lived with him here in Canada the entire time.. when I moved here my husbands youngest son was still in high school and his oldest son and his girlfriend were expecting a baby...I have no kids so it was easier for me to come to Canada... but we had also talked about one day moving to the US... his sons are now grown and doing their own things...his oldest just came back from a 6 month deployment to Afghanistan and is getting married in September...his youngest has a girlfriend and goes back and forth to London every weekend to see her and so we hardly ever see him... my husband isnt that close to his extended family, and they rarely get together other than funerals and the odd holiday.. I on the other hand come from an extremely close family and a very tight circle of friends...the last 5 years have been very hard for me being away...Ive lost 3 family members since Ive lived here and had a niece and nephew born...my oldest niece is graduating from school and I will miss it.. I am very lucky that my husband loves my family and loves my home (Las Vegas), he loves waking up in the mornings and seeing the mountains out the window..

when asked why he wants to go to the US, is to be with my wifes family, to learn more about where my wife comes from, to start a new chapter in our lives... a "good enough" answer

if youre still reading thanks for listening to me ramble on and on...LOL

Yes. Just be honest. There are no right or wrong answers.

Life's just a crazy ride on a run away train

You can't go back for what you've missed

So make it count, hold on tight find a way to make it right

You only get one trip

So make it good, make it last 'cause it all flies by so fast

You only get one trip

Any answer is a good answer, they don't really care, unless u state something negative, ie to join one of the many out of control militias, lol

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Seriously:

Of course it's good enough.....as stated above, there's no right answer...and I don't think it's a cliché to say "because it's the land of opportunity," since it really is...the honest answer is the best one... =) Karin and I kind of plan to role-play some of the typical questions - just to get rid of some of the nervousness. I think it's a little like a job interview - the more relaxed you are, the better.

On the lighter side:

I think I read somewhere, if you work in the phrase.."Purple M&Ms," you get a free (small) ice cream at McDonalds...not valid with other offers, one free treat per non-immigrant ;) Why do I feel like such a clown today..? :jest:

kimmbo,

Agreed. There are many questions asked where it's not the words that they are particularly concerned about. It's the person's demeanor, how they answer.

That probably holds true for most of the questions asked at the interview. :)

Most communication occur by body language versus verbally. If I take the time to think about, " why I wand to live in the US with my wife? " It may raise some suspicions. Or, another example would be, " do you love your wife/husband and what makes him/her a good spouse? " Hmm...I would like to see anyone stutter here.
