I-797C = NOA 1??

OK, maybe a dumb question but here goes: I filed a I-129F on January 8, received an I-797C, Notice of Action on January 26.

Is the term "NOA 1" just a generic term for the first notice of action you receive (with the actual form number varying depending on what Visa you are applying for)?

Also, I see that the California Service Center is now processing cases with a receipt notice date of August 21, 2006. Does that mean I might have 7 more months before a NOA 2? Or is a NOA 2 an intermediate step?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

NOA 1 = Notice of Action. We should get a 2nd notice later. I'm going through CSC also. I saw those dates they are processing now. I'm hoping they're further along than August!

- NOA1 is your first Notice of Acceptance - USCIS has received your application

- NOA2 is your notification that USCIS has Approved your application. 3-4 months down the road

- USCIS sends your approved petition to National Visa Center (NVC) for a name check. About 2 weeks

- NVC forwards to the foreign Consulate. Sometimes the Consulate takes 2-3 weeks to enter the info into their system and send "Packet 3 to the beneficiary

Thanks for the reply Joey, but I'm still confused about the date the servise center is now processing cases on. I assume I should get a NOA 2 (approval) within 2 months from now (3-4 months from my original filing). So then, the petition goes to the NVC within 2 weeks from approval. So what is the "processing"? Is it something other than the approval? It is now almost 7-months since the receipt date of August 21, which the CA service center is now processing. Does that mean my approval is more like 5 months away rather than 2? Thanks again.

the posted processing times are completely worthless.

It takes on the average between 2 and 3 months through the CSC during which time there will probably be no movement whatsoever on your case. Don't despair!

there's a member here on visa journey who keeps and updated timeline of approved cases. Here's the link:

you can see who's been approved. Seems like they're almost finished with December filers and should be moving onto January shortly. *I've got my fingers crossed :)
