question about SSN

Hi

Prior to getting married my husband had been in the US for about 4yrs...He had been issued a SSN..

He has not been in the US since late 2003..My question is once he is back in the US on a K3 will he need

to apply for a new SSN or will he continue to use the one they issued him before?

as I understand it your SSN never changes - it's yours for life (no matter what your immigration status is)

He does not apply for a new SSN. He will continue to use the one already issued.

Thank you...So once he comes back to the US he can just apply for a lost card? Also does anyone in the forum have experience with the US Embassy in Ottaw, Canada? I thought we could go through Toronto but I was wrong..

So once he comes back to the US he can just apply for a lost card?

With K-3 status he can't be issued a replacement card until he is issued an EAD card or after the AOS is approved and is issued an I-551 stamp or card.

In the meantime, he can go into any SSA office and request an SSN Verification Printout. That will give him some proof of his assigned SSN until he's eligible to be issued a card.

He won't be allowed to work until he has one ... you can file for it at the same time you file for AOS.
