Question about Affidavit of Support

My wife is going for her interview in March and one of the documents requested was to bring an Affidavit of Support. Could some one please explain to me what they are looking for? I have my paystubs for the last 6 months, a letter from my company saying how long I have been employed by them and my w-2's for the last 3 years.

Thanks for your help,

Brett

It's either the I-134 or the I-864, depending upon the Consulate's requirements.

8-30-05 Met David at a restaurant in Germany

3-28-06 David 'officially' proposed

4-26-06 I-129F mailed

9-25-06 Interview: APPROVED!

10-16-06 Flt to US, POE Detroit

11-5-06 Married

7-2-07 Green card received

9-12-08 Filed for divorce

12-5-08 Court hearing - divorce final

A great marriage is not when the "perfect couple" comes together.

It is when an imperfect couple learns to enjoy their differences.

Thanks for the quick reply Jen,

I already sent them I-864EZ, so does that mean I just need to bring a copy of that form? Also, could you tell me if that form needs to be notarized?

Ahh, I should have clicked on that link first. I see it says you do need it notarized. I have no idea where it says that on the instructions on the form, I hope there is nothing else I need notarized.

Thanks for your help again,

Brett

No notarization required for the I-864... it's the I-134 that needs notarization. Bring copies of whatever you sent to the interview.

In the line where they ask for the current income on the I-864, what do they mean? For me, for example, I was a college student the last three tax years, so my income has been very low. Only in October have I been working full-time as a manager. So on my 2006 taxes, my income was $11,000---Not nearly high enough to meet 125% of the poverty level for 2 people. However, my current income, when put on a early basis, is much higher: somewhere around $38-40,000.

What do they mean then, by current income?

Current income= what you're earning now.......and that will carry the most weight. You will, however, be required to show the amounts you've earned for the past 3 years. If you earned nothing then you'll need to write a letter explaning why your income was low and you were not required to file an income tax return..... it'll be important to show the person adjudicating your case that your employment is solid.

Okay, so that would make my current income the post-college student income, right? Fortunately I have filed my income taxes the last 3 years (well, last two plus 2006), even though it was so low so that shouldn't be a problem. And I'll definitely be able to get my employer to send me a letter saying that I'm employed, they're not going to fire me (yet), etc, etc.
