As you may know, each russian/ukrainian person has a second or should i say middle name after their dad, it is only used in our official papers. Did you put down that name for your fiance or you left it blank?

Anna and I (and many threads here) went back an forth on her middle name.

She insisted it was no a middle name but Patronic. On her passport it did not get interpreted into English so..

She wanted it to be left out so we left it blank.

So basically to leave it alone?

I am hoping it won't cause any problems or any RFE and they'll ask for explanation why it was left out.

I always thought it was called a patronym. But hey, you learn something new everyday.

Anyways, in our case we just turned the patronym into her middle name for USCIS purposes. Worked out just fine. But in my own case many years ago, all of us dropped our patronyms.

As I understand it, on your AOS application you can make your name almost whatever you want it to be. The application does ask all previous names used so they can easily trace it back.

We did same as Satellite's wife. Used the patronym for middle name.

I believe the way the U.S. papers are set up, the middle name is assumed to be the patronym. If your fiancee was from a Spanish-speaking country, they'd probably have two last names. There are specific instructions for that too, but all the guys I work with said they either dropped one or used one as their middle name. It is legal to go either way, as long as you list your previous names used. That's why she can put down her married name if she chooses to take your name.

While learning foreign languages I've learned a very valuable lesson....

Don't sweat the small stuff!

If you can be understood, who cares if you're exactly correct or not.

You need to be correct about the paperwork and that sort of thing, but for communication purposes.... who gives a $#!t?

I dropped mine completely, because I thought the patronym wasn't really a name! :) My relatives are naturalized US citizens, and they use their patronyms as middle names. When I saw it on paper, I thought it looked kinda funny, and I decided not to have a middle name at all :) :) And I didn't list it among my previously used names - didn't have any problems.
