Thanks for your replies.

I guess my source of confusion is that the embassy website checklist says to bring things such as Birth Certificate (which is effectively the family registry I believe), PCC, Marriage Certificate, and Affidavit of Support. So I'm wondering, do I really need to bring more copies/originals of those in addition to the ones I send with DS-230 to NVC? Or, since I'm not DCF but filing through NVC, those documents will all be forwarded to embassy, so I don't have to worry about them? So it sounds like just the docs I mentioned, plus a return envelope?

Yes, you are correct, but like I said, have her bring what you think you need AND everything else. You might not need them, but why take a chance and go there and have her denied for something she has at home. Only delays things. Actually, my wife says they lost one of the original pages of our translation for her family register. It wasn't an important page so it didn't really make a difference, but they do sometimes lose things.

But sounds like you have done your homework and know what you need. Yes, this part is really gut wrenching, the waiting and wondering if you covered all your bases. But in the end, just go with your gut and I'm sure everything will be okay. We worried and worried, but in the end, it seemed like all our worries were for nothing. But maybe it really wasn't because we made sure we were prepared.

Again, Good Luck and Best Wishes,

vny

Thanks Justin and Akiko! I had looked into Maui some because the person in charge of my local bank told me that was her favorite and it was beautiful, but they all look great. We decided on doing a small beach wedding since we won't have many people there.

Justin, was it hard getting a slot on short notice, or did you two plan way ahead allowing a lot of time to get the visa? Again thanks again everyone for the information!

Hi Chris & Kirara,

Sorry for my late reply.

We planned a few months ahead of time so it wasn't an issue but you can always call and ask. I think they have a scheduling calendar on their websites as well. We didn't have to get a Visa as Masako was returning to Japan after our wedding so that we could apply for the I-130. Japan is a visa waiver country so we didn't have to apply for one for her to come visit.

You will want to schedule with someone there to get your marriage license at least a couple weeks before so that you know you can get it taken care of before your wedding.

I'll try to hop on VJ more often if you have more questions. :)

Thanks again for the info. I didn't know since I gave NVC her email also. I hope that it only takes 7 days like Kyle & Krystel and not a month like Akiko. I am starting to hate weekends because I know nothing will get done lol.

Hello everyone!

I'm new to the forum and currently gathering all the information for my Japanese fiance.

I'm so glad that there is a thread here for all us Japan Filers! :)

I just have a quick question. I read online that there is a fee that needs to be paid, $400, in either usd or yen during his interview at the Tokyo embassy... But I'm a bit confused because when we first mail in our I-129k, we have to send them a check for $455 in fees.

...which one is it? Do we both have to pay these pricey fees twice?

I'm sorry to sound like a fumbling idiot, but I am a bit confused on this..

Any help will be much appreciated!!! :)

Not totally sure since we went the CR-1 route, but I think that fee is paid at the embassy only if you are going with the DCF (i.e., Direct Consular Filing) route. If you pay the fee to NVC, then I don't think that will apply, but the K-1 process is a little different than the CR-1. There are a bunch of K-1 filers here, so maybe someone can shed better light.

Good Luck
