To to get the sealed visa envelope and X rays through security

The fiance asked me to post this question because his keyboard is messed up and makes typing anything more than 5 words a lesson in futility.

He is flying from Vancouver to Montreal on February 11. I will meet him in Montreal and then we will drive back to New Hampshire. Regarding his X rays and sealed visa envelope, should he place them in his checked baggage or should he hand carry them through security and onto the plane?

My concern is that his bag will get lost (has happened before) and we will not have the much needed visa on Sunday when we need to cross into the US.

His concern is that if he carries a sealed envelope through security, they will request that he open it.

Feedback?

Bring them with the carry-on luggage. He'll have to give them the sealed envelope. They didn't ask me for the x-ray, but I kept it within easy access just in case.

They won't open the sealed envelope, will they? His concern is that we need to keep it sealed until he crosses the border.

Ah, sorry, misread what you'd meant (I'd tried to edit my other reply, but I guess it didn't work because you were replying :) ). I'd still keep them with the carry-on luggage even when not activating the visa. The chances of them asking you to open a sealed envelope with documents is extremely slim (esp one stamped with USCIS markings), unless he's been blacklisted by the government.

When flying home from my interview in Montreal, I had the envelope in my carry-on luggage. I did not have to show the envelope to security at all -- it had nothing to do with getting through the security clearance and he will not be activating the visa on a domestic flight. :) I also carried the x-ray with me in my carry-on luggage -- my advice is for him to roll it up (don't crease the film) and put it in a cardboard roll container (you can get them at Staples or any office supply store) -- it makes for much easier transport.

when I flew back from Montreal... I packed my envelope in my carry on bag and I am glad I did.. when I got back to Vancouver I found out my checked suitcase was still in Calgary  ...

I did end up getting my suitcase the next day but I am glad I didn't pack the envelope in the suitcase.... what if they hadn't found my bag??

If he wants, he could put his x-ray in his suitcase. If they didn't look at it at the interview, no one will probably ever look at it. Mine is only opened because I wanted to see it, no one has asked to see it. Definitely carry on the envelope though. I carried mine on on a flight from Vancouver to Toronto and it wasn't a problem with security at all, nothing was said. When they scan your bags, they can see what's in there, which is just papers.

You can also roll the x-ray in a tube - it wont damage it and it's easier that way for travelling with.

I doubt they would open it, if they try- tell them to go get someone from US Customs.

Dumb question- An X Ray is safe to go through an X Ray machine, right?

Yep its safe, once this paper has ben exposed to the light ( once its developped or before taking any X-ray) there is nothing that can react anymore on it. And the kind of X-ray used is not the same, X-ray pictures are using a much dangerous source, thats is why you need to wear a lead jacket or lead protection on other body parts. If that was the case in a security check I dont think it would be really safe.

I carried mine onto the plane when I went up to the interview in Montreal. Took the x-rays on the plane with me, and cause i was on a regional jet had to put the carry on bag I had on Sky Service (that trolley out on the run way) the ENTIRE flight I was paranoid someone would steal my bag, get my bag soaking wet (it was snowing that day), or it would get "lost" in one of our layovers. I was watching that baggage hold like a hawk. It worked just fine for me, and was there waiting for me when I walked off the plane :)

Where did the misconception come from that a sealed envelope in carry on luggage will be opened? They X-ray everything and will only request a secondary inspection if they see something they don't like (or if you are a lucky selectee). A bunch of papers in an envelope will not raise suspicion going through the X-ray machine.

YMMV

When flying back to Hellifax from Mtl, I kept it in my backpack. Murphys law states if you put it with ur checked luggage, luggage will go missing and never be found!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1
